Melvin Haag

Haag

May 12, 1932 – November 27, 2023

Melvin Otto Haag, born on May 12, 1932, entered eternal rest on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 91½ years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Virginia (Rusty). Also preceded in death by his parents, Otto Haag and Adelheit (Stahl): three brothers, Harvey, Edward and Albert; and brother-in-law, Arlon Dowdy.

Melvin is survived by his daughter, Chris Lyssy and her husband, Kenneth; two grandchildren, Cullen Wayne Hopkins, and Jennifer Hundley and husband, Wade; two great-grandchildren, Emma Hundley and Sawyer Hundley; sister- in-law, Carol Zellner of Studio City, California; two sisters, Alice Dowdy of Blanco, Texas and Mary Jane Zuercher (husband, Alan) of Kendalia, Texas; sister-in-law, Janice Haag of Harper, Texas; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Melvin grew up on the family farm in Kreutzberg, Texas, and attended Boerne schools. He helped take care of his younger siblings while his parents did daily farming chores and provided for the family. After completing his school years, Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1952, training in San Diego, spending his enlisted term in Hawaii and Japan, then finishing up a stint in the Reserve until November 1960.

Following his active service in the Navy, Melvin started his employment with the Texas State Highway Department and continued with them for 30 years until he retired in 1987.

After a short retirement, the department encouraged him to come out of retirement and work a few more years as an inspector. He was with the state during the construction of Interstate 10 between Kendall County and Kerr County.

Melvin married the love of his life, Rusty, on July 15, 1960. The two of them enjoyed sharing good times and made many many good friends, being members of the Boerne Turn Verin. They bowled for many years and traveled to many tournaments including Las Vegas several times.

Melvin and Rusty fell short by 4 days of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary when we lost her on July 11, 2020.

Melvin was a rancher at heart and was happiest when sitting on his tractor planting or shredding the fields.

He was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend. We love you, Melvin, and we will miss you always. Rest in peace.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home. Arrangements with Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home of Boerne.
