Deer rally to notch first win of the year

Comfort hosted West Campus in a non-district girls basketball game on Monday and came away with a 38-34 victory for its first win of the season.

The Deer improved to 1-2 and will play in the Pearsall tournament this weekend.

Comfort’s win wasn’t easy and the Deer fell behind early and were trailing West Campus 13-3 after one. The Deer steadied the ship in the second and won the period, 15-3, for the 18-16 halftime lead.

The teams followed the same pattern in the second half after the Lady Cougars outscored the Deer in the third, 13-8, to retake the lead at 29-26.

Just like in the second, Comfort had a big fourth quarter and rallied for the win after they outscored their opponent 12-5 for the 4-point victory.

Katie Haffner led the Deer with 10 points and scored 8 of them at the free-throw line, Rachel Adams and Madison Davis tallied 8 points apiece, Tindall Ahrens netted 6, while Jael Hernandez, Molly Gowan and Hannah Adams added 2 points apiece.

Rachel Adams grabbed 10 rebounds, came up with 3 steals and dished out 2 assists, while Ahrens snagged 9 boards.
