Cypress Christian is a team on a mission and played like it Thursday night when they defeated Geneva School of Boerne in the second round of the TAPPS state football playoffs in Giddings, 55-6.
The Warriors were state runner ups last year and return around 20 seniors from that team and are looking to finish the job this season.
Thursday’s game in Giddings went
to a running clock in the fourth quarter as the Houston school dominated the game. It’s the second year in a row the Eagles loss to the Warriors in the second round.
Geneva’s year ends at 7-5 overall under first-year coach Grant Gaston, who said he was proud of his team, especially the seniors. “The seniors bought in, I was their third coach in three years but they bought into what we were trying to do with a young team,” he said. “You can look at wins and losses and second guess, but I was proud of what we did this year and I’m already looking ahead to next year.”
Cypress Christian tallied a rushing and passing touchdown in the first quarter for the 13-0 lead. The Warriors really opened it up in the second stanza and scored four touchdowns to open up a 41-0 advantage by halftime.
The Houston school opened the third with a 64-yard touchdown pass just two minutes into the quarter to make it 48-0.
Cypress Christian registered one more touchdown late in the third for the 55-0 advantage.
Geneva wasn’t going down without a fight and had the final points of the game. Eagles QB Jacob Rosenstiel tossed a touchdown pass to Brady Chandler in the fourth quarter.
There were eight seniors on this year’s team, Jacob Rosenstiel, Jake Plesko, K.P. Fitzgerald, Walker Cone, Josh Dennis, Nick Nowosiwsky, Josh Rabinowitz and Stephen Syamkem.
