Boerne High’s quest to return to the state finals continues Friday when the Greyhounds tangle with former district foe La Vernia at Comalander Stadium.
Kickoff for Friday’s second- round playoff contest is set for 7 p.m. in San Antonio.
The Bears are coming off a 35-14 win over Tuloso-Midway last week, while the Hounds took care of business last Thursday against Taylor at Dripping Springs on a cold and windy night, 42-28.
Both teams are having good seasons after Boerne won its fourth straight district title at 5-0, while La Vernia was 4-1 and finished second behind Port Lavaca Calhoun. BHS is 10-1 and the Bears are 9-2.
La Vernia started with the fireworks right away last week after Aidan Duffek returned the opening kickoff 77 yards for a score.
From there, Bears quarterback Keegan Hajek led the team with three rushing TDs on 21 carries that went for 84 yards, while he completed 7 of 14 passes for 86 yards.
Bears running back Garrett Lamb scored the other TD on a 14-yard dash to the end zone.
The Hound struggled with the Ducks for a while and last week’s game was tied 28-28 before Boerne pulled away in the fourth quarter with two TDs.
Because of the bad weather, Boerne focused on its ground game and ran for 269 yards on 50 carries.
“Our mindset is to throw the ball to score and run the ball to win,” BHS coach Che Hendrix said.
Adam Hicks led the ground attack with 25 carries for 130 yards and 2 TDs as the team’s leading rusher T.J. Dement missed his second straight game with an injury.
Jaxon Baize rushed 8 times for 27 yards and a score, while Hutson Hendrix ran the Wildcat and carried the ball 16 times for 106 yards and 2 scores.
After having a three-headed monster at quarterback in its last few games, the Greyhounds only used two QBs last week, Hendrix to run the Wildcat and Baize to throw and run the ball.
Baize completed 8 of 18 passes for 117 yards and had a touchdown toss to Brooks Perez, who snagged 6 passes for 103 yards.
Hutson Hendrix led the defense with 11 tackles, while Javi Benavidez made 9 tackles and Charlie Stahl and Ryan Hooper both recorded 7 stops.
Ben Bays had a big sack in the game, while McCoy Bruce came up with two interceptions vs. the Ducks, one that basically sealed the victory for the Hounds.
