SAN ANTONIO – Champion kept it close against Marshall during Tuesday’s non-district girls basketball game at Harlan, but the Lady Rams used a strong second half to defeat the Lady Chargers.
Marshall won Tuesday’s contest 59-41 to drop Champion to 0-2 this season. The Lady Chargers are looking for their first win of the year this weekend where they’ll play in the Rouse Tournament.
Champion was down 10 points at the end of the first but outscored the Lady Rams by a point in the second, 8-7, to trim the lead to single digits by halftime, 27-18, however Marshall blew it open in the third quarter.
The Lady Rams outscored the Chargers in the period 23-6 to basically double up Champion by the time the game went to the fourth quarter, 50-24.
Marshall hit a 3 to start the third quarter and then Bralyn Gault answered with a 2-point bucket at the 6:00 mark of the stanza on an inbounds play but the Chargers went on a scoring drought of almost five minutes. They didn’t score again until Hailey Winn knocked in a basket with 1:17 left.
In between the Gault and Winn buckets, Marshall scored 16 straight points to basically blow it open.
Champion fought to the end and outscored the Rams in the final period, 17-9 as they hit three 3-pointers but it wasn’t enough.
Taylor Burk finished with 10 points, Gault scored 7, Winn and Abby Sommer both netted 6, Addison Darter tallied 5, Kayla Ramirez scored 3, Adriana Barreiro hit 2 free throws and Casandra Aleman finished with 2.
