Boerne High’s playoff run in 2022 didn’t end until they advanced all the way to state championship game. That ’22 run started with a win over Taylor in the first round and the Greyhounds hope the 2023 season follows a similar path.
BHS draws Taylor again in the opening round again and the Greyhounds are in the hunt for another win against the Ducks with hopes of advancing to the state title game for the second consecutive season.
This year’s Boerne – Taylor contest will be Thursday in Dripping Springs, 7 p.m.
The Ducks finished the year at 5-5 and went 2-3 in district for fourth place. Taylor had been scoring a lot, but were held to just 7 points last week in a 13-7 loss to Burnet that dropped them to fourth place in 13-4A DI.
Taylor scored 62 vs. Jarrell and 66 against Canyon Lake.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said the Ducks have some weapons around the field.
“They’ve scored a lot of points, they have a good quarterback and running back and a left tackle with a couple of DI offers,” he said. “They like throwing the ball and taking their shots down the field. They do a good job offensively.”
Taylor QB Joshua Mikulencak has thrown for 2,836 yards and 25 TDs and only been picked off twice, while scoring 9 rushing TDs.
The quarterback’s favorite target is another Mikulencak, Jacob, who leads the team in receptions with 1,092 yards and 12 TDs.
Jackson Meller is another talented wide receiver, who has tallied 939 receiving yards and 6 scores, while Andrias Fisher is the team’s leading rusher with 645 yards and 6 TDs.
“Their quarterback makes a huge difference,” Hendrix said. “They have some good skill kids.”
One thing Boerne showed in last week’s 47-7 win against Fredericksburg is that the Greyhounds have a lot of depth.
Starting running back T.J. Dement didn’t play but others picked up the slack as six different players either ran or caught touchdowns.
Michael Igbo rushed for 101 yards on just 11 carries and had a score, Adam Hicks finished with 69 ground yards on 9 totes and a score, while Ivan Perez carried the ball 9 times for 34 yards and a TD.
Jaxon Baize and Hank Hendrix both threw touchdown passes, with Baize tossing two of them and Hendrix one.
Brooks Perez, Matthew Garrison and Hutson Hendrix all had receiving touchdowns.
BHS kicker Carson Cooper actually led the team in points with 11 after he made 5 extra points and kicked 2 field goals.
“Depth matters, especially late in the year and when people get banged up, depth becomes critical,” said Coach Hendrix, who added that he wasn’t sure if Dement was going to play Thursday. “Igbo has done a really good job and Ivan is a downhill runner. Dylan has had a great year and he commands some double teams. That’s what a spread offense is, it’s about multiple guys that can hurt you and we have 8 to 10 guys that can hurt you.”
Defensively, Javi Benavidez and Hutson Hendrix both came up with interceptions, while Hendrix led the team in tackles with 10. Ryan Hooper had 8 tackles, Carlos Requena made 7 stops and Braden Bays recorded 6 tackles.
This is Boerne’s fourth district title in a row and all four have come with perfect district seasons. They have won 9 straight games after dropping the season opener and Coach Hendrix said he likes where the team is heading into the postseason.
“We’re playing our best football and we’re playing at a high level,” he said.
