Boerne boys bag bronze at state meet

ROUND ROCK – Before the Boerne High boys cross-country team ran in its first race back in August, Greyhounds coach Chris Carter held time trails just to see what he had coming into the season.

Based on what he saw, Carter felt like the BHS boys could be in for a special season.

Carter’s feeling was right on the money as the boys from Boerne concluded the fall running season at the state meet Saturday afternoon and returned to Boerne with some hardware.

The Boerne boys finished third at Saturday’s 4A meet to earn bronze medals.

“After the time trials, I was thinking that we had a chance to be really good and be really special and from there they continued to grow and get better,” Carter said. “When they came through (in August), we were running mid-season times and we hadn’t run a race yet so we thought we could be pretty good.”

The key to Saturday’s bronze medal was the pack running by the Boerne boys. The Hounds went 22-23-25-27-30 as their scoring five finished within nine places of each other.

“We know the strength of our team is the gap between 1 and 5, so that’s something we’ve talked about and worked on. They ran tight like they did all season,” Carter said. “They run like that in practice and keep each other tight and accountable and it paid off today.”

Boerne’s pack running resulted in 127 points for third, while Canyon won it with 56 points and La Feria was second at 105, For the Hounds, Aaron Garcia was 22nd and clocked in at 16:42.2, Carsten Bain came in at 23rd with a 16:42.5, Barrett Crofut finished 25th in 16:45.9, Tayson Farar placed 27th in 16:47.6, Jackson Temple posted a 16:51.2 for 30th, Caleb Benchoff completed the course in 17:47.0 and Ethan Christianson recorded an 18:28.2 for 90th.

“Coming in we felt like we had a shot to get on the podium,” Carter said. “They came in and ran big when it matters and today it mattered the most and they ran the biggest.”

Eleanor Davis was the only runner for the BHS girls program and turned in a time of 12:04.1 in the twomile race for 21st in a field of 152 individual runners.

Davis said she had fun even though she was the team’s lone runner at Saturday’s meet. She also ran solo at regionals.

Carter said he knew Davis would turn in a solid time.

“She’s always a competitor and she’s captain on our girls team. She had a good day today, she competed well, but that’s who Eleanor is,” he said. “No matter where we go Eleanor is going to compete and she competed well today.”
