Boerne Champion opened its girls basketball season on the road Saturday afternoon in Liberty Hill.
It was a close game but the Lady Panthers prevailed 40-30 to start the Lady Chargers off at 0-1 this year.
Champion was looking for its first win Tuesday against Marshall at Harlan. After that, they’ll play in the Rouse tournament this weekend.
In Saturday’s game, Liberty Hill was up 11-9 over the Chargers by the end of the first quarter and then outscored Champion in the second, 10-7.
Champion did hold leads in the first and second quarters but went into halftime trailing, 21-16.
The Lady Chargers struggled to get out of single digits in each period and couldn’t. They tallied 7 in the third and fourth stanzas to make it three straight quarters with only 7 points to go with 9 in the first.
Liberty Hill netted 12 in the third for its best quarter of the night and finished in double digits in three of four quar- ters. They ended the game with 7 points in the fourth and outscored the Chargers in the second half, 19-14.
Addison Darter led the Chargers with 9 points, Abby Sommer tallied 7 points and Bralyn Gault added 6 points. Darter and Burk both grabbed 5 rebounds, Adriana Barreiro dished out 5 assists and Darter had 3 assists.
