“Next game, next play” is what Geneva head coach Grant Gaston preached to his Geneva School of Boerne squad following their devastating 74-7 loss to Holy Cross of San Antonio in their TAPPS Division III District 3 Championship Friday at Eagles Stadium.
Their second straight district championship loss to the Knights is one Geneva is going to have to take on the cheek in preparation for their playoff matchup Friday, against an opponent to be determined.
“Hopefully we get this loss out of our system,” said Gaston, who is in his first year coaching the Eagles. “Next game, next play, we move on.”
Geneva’s lone touchdown came at the 1:29 mark in the fourth quarter.
Save for that, it was the Holy Cross Show all 48 minutes, with the Knights scoring 54 of its 74 points in the first half.
Marco Gomez led the Knights with three touchdown scores, and Nick Hall chipped in two scores. Gomez produced 25, 60 and 2-yard touchdown scores, respectively, with the latter score giving Holy Cross a 54-0 lead going into the second half.
Hall generated 40-yard and 57-yard touchdown scores.
Holy Cross received touchdown contributions in the first half from Daniel Perez (4-yd touchdown run), a scoop up return after a Geneva botched punt return by Sam Valenzuela, and a two-yard touchdown catch by Gomez.
Knights quarterback Gilbert Alvarado scored two total touchdowns - one running and one passing - to increase Holy Cross’ lead to 67-0 in the third quarter.
Daniel Soto-Sanchez scored the Knights’ last touchdown on a fiveyard run in the fourth quarter.
Holy Cross completed its second consecutive district championship with a 3-0 district record and an 8-2 overall record.
Geneva, meanwhile, completed district with a 2-1 record and finished 6-4 overall for the year.
Gaston commended the seniors on his squad, such as K.P. Fitzgerald and Jacob Rosenstiel, for keeping the Eagles motivated throughout the game despite the lopsided deficit.
“Our team understands that the season is not over yet,” Gaston said. “We have improved from Game 1 of the season to where we are at now, and we just have to get better. They believe in themselves that they can still make a run.”
