‘Hounds pound Billies for fourth straight district title

BY JEFF B. FLINN Managing Editor

The Boerne Greyhounds wasted little time showing the Fredericksburg crowd why they are the top-ranked team in Class 4A Division I play, trouncing the Battlin’ Billies, 47-7 Friday.

With the win, their ninth straight after losing their opener, the ‘Hounds moved to 5-0 in district and captured their fourth consecutive district title. Boerne ended all four championship seasons without a district loss.

The Hounds face the Taylor Ducks in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs, likely Thursday, in their push to return to the 4A championship game.

In this final game of the regular season, Boerne used two long Jaxon Baize touchdown passes, a 35-yard field goal and two red-zone rushing TDs to pull away 30-0 at halftime.

And while the offense piled up the points, the Boerne defense showed up to play. Already down 13-0, Fredericksburg started its second series at the Boerne 45-yard line. On first down, Billies quarterback Brooks Immel was sacked for a nine-yard loss - and Fredericksburg would not cross midfield again until its final drive, with just 4:30 left in the game and down 47-0.

Fredericksburg (3-7, 2-3 in district) knew what it was up against Friday and consistently ran the clock down as far as they could on each play. But it had no effect on the game’s outcome as Boerne (9-1, 5-0 in district) scored on its first five possessions.

Baize found Hutson Hendrix wide open for a 47-yard catch-and-run touchdown just 1:40 into the game for the quick 6-0 lead with a missed extra point.

The Hounds’ next possession started at the 4-yard line. Six plays later, Baize completed a pass to Brooks Perez, who juked a defender and raced into the end zone on the 62-yard completion. Carson Cooper’s extra point made it 13-0.

On its next drive, Boerne drove from its own 37 to the Billies 18 before the drive stalled. Cooper nailed the 35-yard field goal for a 16-0 lead.

The Hounds then scored twice in 75 seconds to put the game away.

A 15-yard punt gave Boerne the ball at the Billies 35 and three plays later, running back Adam Hicks ran 12 yards around the left side for a touchdown and a 23-0 lead.

Boerne surprised everybody not wearing a white uniform with an ensuing onside kick, recovering it at the Fredericksburg 44-yard line. A beautiful Hank Hendrix-to-Brooks Perez 35-yard pass set up an Ivan Perez 8-yard touchdown run. Boerne was now in solid control by a score of 30-0, which stood at the half.

The Hounds scored on their first two second-half possessions, a 57-yard Michael Igbo run and a 25-yard Cooper field goal, for a 40-0 lead after three quarters.

The final Greyhounds score was a Hank Hendrix-to-Matt Garrison 21-yard hookup at the 7:35 mark of the final quarter. Fredericksburg tacked on the final score of the night with 2:20 left to play for the 47-7 final.
