Chargers sack Mac, finish fourth in district

Champion held a 28-6 lead over MacArthur by the end of the first quarter and went on to post a 47-20 win over the Brahmas in Friday’s regular- season finale at BISD Stadium.

The only mystery left after such a blowout win was where would the Chargers land in the final district standings when the night was over.

Champion needed Wagner to beat New Braunfels Canyon Friday to give the Chargers third place, but the Cougars shut down the high-powered Thunderbirds, 14-7, to force a threeway tie for second.

Champion, Wagner and NB Canyon all finished tied for second in the district at 5-2 and, based on point differential, the Chargers dropped to fourth place once the playoffs begin next weekend.

Champion opens on the road and will play at College Station. For more details, look in the Wednesday Boerne Star and on the Boerne Star Sports twitter account.

The Chargers finished the regular season 8-2 and ended up as the fourthplace team in District 12-5A DI.

Smithson Valley, NB Canyon, Wagner and Champion will represent the league this postseason.

Champion coach Blane Ellis said it’s a testament to how good the district is, that a team can win eight games and go 5-2 in district and place fourth.

“It’s a tough district and we were up for the challenge and our guys did what we needed to do to make the playoffs,” Ellis said. “We knew we could do a lot of good things and our guys have done that. We had two losses and we had our chances in those two games.

“We went 8-2 overall and I bet a lot of people would have lost money on that bet earlier in the year,” Ellis added.

In Friday’s game, Jordan Ballin threw four TDs passes in the first quarter. Sawyer Bolli had the first, Cameron Logan caught two and Campbell Deberry had the other and it was 28-6.

In the second quarter, Luke Rossi intercepted a Brahmas pass and returned it for a touchdown to make it 35-6.

The defense also came up with a safety, Nathan Bell booted a field goal, and Bolli hauled in Ballin’s fifth touchdown pass of the night for the 47-6 lead by halftime.

Grant Menzies and Bolli also intercepted passes in the first half, while Hudson Simmons recovered a Mac fumble on a kickoff.

Ellis started rotating players and the Chargers didn’t score in the second half, but the Brahmas tacked on two final TDs in the fourth quarter for the final of 47-20.

“I like how it all fell together, you can’t ask for more than going into the playoffs with a big win,” Ellis said. “We’re looking forward to the playoffs and to our matchup and excited to go get after it.”
