Geneva School of Boerne and Holy Cross enter this week’s contest undefeated in district play at 2-0, which means this Friday’s clash in Boerne is for the league title.
The Eagles host the Knights 7 p.m. Friday at Geneva and the winner takes the TAPPS 3-III championship.
Geneva coach Grant Gaston said they’re excited to be in this position.
“It’s always great to be playing meaningful football games late in the season,” he said. “For our team, the opportunity to play for the district championship on the last day of the (regular) season shows the continued growth of our Always Be Competing philosophy and our players’ belief in themselves and what we can accomplish.”
Both the Eagles and Knights come into the game with lopsided district wins in their previous two games. Geneva beat Corpus Christi John Paul II 57-14 and then defeated Schertz John Paul II last week, 70-45.
Holy Cross topped Schertz JP II 57-13 and then rolled CC JP II last week, 72-6.
The Eagles scored 127 points in those two games and Holy Cross tallied 129 points against those same two opponents.
Geneva’s defense gave up 59 in the two contests and the Knights yielded 19.
Gaston said the Eagles have been able to score a lot lately because they’ve gotten their run-game going and added that their offensive line has been the key.
“We’ve been running the ball more consistently over the last four games and that has opened up our offense, both in the air and on the ground,” he said. “Our offensive line has matured so much over the course of the season and they are the reason that we’ve been able score so much in recent weeks. They deserve all of the credit.”
After scoring 43 in a loss to Shiner St. Paul, the Eagles have won four straight and scored at least 49 points in those four wins. They’ve averaged 56 points a contest during that four-game stretch.
The 70 points the Eagles scored last week is a season high as they rolled to 665 yards of offense.
In last week’s game, Jacob Rosenstiel tossed for 265 yards and 3 TDs, while he added 230 yards on the ground on 25 carries to go with 5 rushing touchdowns. He totaled 8 TDs and 495 yards from scrimmage.
JonMichael Raimondo added 4 catches for 64 yards and 2 scores, KP Fitzgerald ran for 98 yards on 13 totes and a score, Noah Brunsvold carried the ball 12 times for 72 yards and Fitzgerald also hauled in 7 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown.
Rosenstiel has now thrown for 2,156 yards on 172 of 307 passing for 27 touchdowns to go with 757 rushing yards and 14 more TDs.
Fitzgerald has 15 receiving touchdowns and 2 rushing and has also come up with 6 interceptions on defense. Jake Plesko and Fitzgerald are tied for the most fumble recoveries with 3 apiece.
Geneva is 6-3 and Holy Cross is 7-2. The Knights won last year’s contest in San Antonio, 28-0. Gaston said the Knights are talented.
“Holy Cross is a very athletic team that is well coached,” he said. “To beat them we’ll have to continue to keep scoring in bunches, get some stops on defense, and force some takeaways. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
