Boerne High visits Fredericksburg Friday and the District 14-4A title is on the line.

Kickoff for this Friday’s district-championship battle is set for 7 p.m. at Battlin’ Billies Stadium.

It’s pretty simple for the Greyhounds – beat the Battlin’ Billies and they get the title outright.

If they lose, there could be a three-way tie atop the 14-4A DI standings depending on if Uvalde beats Somerset.

If Uvalde does top Somerset and Fred defeats Boerne, then Boerne, Uvalde and Somerset would all be 4-1 and it would go to tiebreaker to determine seeding for the playoffs.

If Boerne beats the Billies for this year’s title, it would be their fourth straight with a perfect district record.

BHS Coach Hendrix said they have bigger fish to fry than winning a district title, but added that they are special and that they would take a moment to reflect on being a district champ before focusing on the playoffs.

“I think at the end of a regular season we would pause and take a lot of pride in winning a district championship. We never want to get tired of winning,” he said. “It takes a lot of effort to win a district championship and we’re always excited to win one. We’ll take it in and celebrate and go back to work.”

The Boerne football program has never won four district titles in a row but Hendrix said he’s not worried about where this puts him or the program in the annals of Greyhound football history.

“We don’t really think about those things, those are things we can look back on at the end of the year or whenever,” he said. “We don’t really think a lot about it and try to stay in the moment.”

Fred is only 3-6 overall but Hendrix said the Billies have been playing well in district.

“Their quarterback got hurt early and they went through different quarterbacks and finally settled on one. They’ve done a good job of running the ball, that’s what they want to do, run downhill,” he said. “They’ve gotten better each week and defensively, they’ve improved. They’re tough and tenacious.”

One thing the Boerne – Fred game has shown Hendrix is that anything can happen and it usually does.

“We’ve had some barn burners, overtime games, games not being decided until the last possession, things like that,” he said. “It’s a really fun rivalry and we expect nothing less. It’s the last home game of the year for them so there will be a lot of emotion for their seniors and they’re playing for a district championship too, so it’ll be a great atmosphere.”

BHS is coming off a 31-7 win over Somerset and TJ Dement officially ran for 213 yards but left with an ankle injury. Hendrix said he hoped the senior running back would be ready to go Friday night.

Hutson Hendrix ran for three touchdowns out of the quarterback Wildcat formation, while Jaxon Baize and Hank Hendrix also saw snaps under center.

Dylan Perez came up with an interception and so did McCoy Bruce who returned his pick for a score but it was called back due to a penalty on the return, however the pick stood.
