2nd at district meet

The Champion boys cross country team won this year’s district title, while the Lady Chargers were second at Thursday’s 26-5A meet in Seguin at Starcke Park.

Not only did the Champion girls place second but they had the individual winner as well.

Both teams advance to the Regional IV-5A meet scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23, at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals not on an advancing team head to Corpus Christi.

Varsity Boys

Champion won the meet with 29 points, followed by Smithson Valley (60), Pieper (79), Wagner (93), NB Canyon (140), Kerrville Tivy (150), Veterans Memorial (190) and Seguin (191).

The Chargers had three of the top four runners and its scoring five finished within the top 12 spots.

Luis Tovar, Caleb Dehart and Charlie Houck went 2-3-4 with times of 15:58.61, 16:18.28 and 16:20, while Ben Matamoros placed 8th in a time of 16:44.09, Noah Perez finished 12th after running a 17:03.68, Patrick Thornton posted a 17:21.66 for 17th and Luke Grametbauer came in 22nd with a time of 17:40.60.

The JV boys ended their season as district champs with 26 points.

Varsity Girls

Elizabeth Leachman blew away the field with a time of 16:32.8 to pace the Lady Chargers to a second-place finish with 51 points.

NB Canyon won the meet after scoring 46 points, and after Champion, it was Pieper (69), Kerrville Tivy (86), Smithson Valley (112), Veterans Memorial (163), Wagner (181) and Seguin (239).

Leachman turned in a time of 16:32.8 to beat the second-place runner by almost three minutes. Kynley Albright came in 5th with a 19:42.99, Emma Rice placed 8th after running a 20:02.98, Breanna Hempton, Kiley Johnson and Grace Mondini went 18-19-20 after Hempton posted a 20:44.97, Johnson turned in a 20:46.58 and Mondini clocked in at 20:50.60, while Luciana Zazueta Ibarra rounded out the team with a time of 21:31.56 for 27th.

The JV girls won the district title with 28 points to close out their season.

Champion finished second in the girls race and had the individual champion in Elizabeth Leachman (15), who won the race by almost three minutes.
