Davenport drops BHS to open second round

Boerne High hosted No. 3 stateranked Davenport Tuesday in a District 27-4A match and the Lady Wolves were able to sweep the Lady Greyhounds.

Davenport remained perfect in district play at 7-0 after they claimed the 25-10, 25-17, 25-16 win, while BHS drops to 19-15 overall and 3-4 in district.

The Lady Hounds were at Bandera Friday. Tuesday’s match began the second round of district action for Boerne, which ended the first round in fourth place.

BHS coach Tisha Pettibon said they play well late in matches, but added that they need faster starts.

“We’ve just had some slow starts in the first sets and we can’t do that Friday in Bandera,” she said. “We’ve got to try to get every win that we can, every match that we can.”

Boerne started slow Tuesday and barely reached double digits at 10 points, but they played better in the final two sets, scoring 17 and 16 points.

In the second set, BHS was within four at 21-17 before the Wolves pulled away by scoring the final four points.

In the third set, Boerne trimmed the lead to a point at 15-14 before the Lady Wolves flexed their muscles and went on a 10-2 spurt to end it.

Pettibon said they switched up offenses and it worked better.

“We’ve been winning in the 6-2 (offensive formation) but it wasn’t working and then we switched offenses and it worked,” she said. “We just have to clean up some things and we’ll be good.”

Boerne found some success tipping the ball to the corners of the courts and Pettibon said it was by design because of Davenport’s blockers.

“We were keeping it off the net and hitting around the block and finding spots,” she said. “That worked better for us and something you need to do when you’re facing a big blocking team and they have huge blockers everywhere.”

Ava Rocchio finished with 10 kills, Paige Stegall tallied 4 kills, while Aubree Stegall and Kynsie Jones added 5 kills each.

Presley Mullins served up the team’s only ace, Calynn Ramos had the only block and added 21 assists and 11 digs, Haley Wheeler led the team in digs with 13, while Adyson Hudson and Kinsley Sawyer both came up with 7 digs.
