Freddie Gass

Freddie Gass

May 22, 1940 – March 7, 2022

Freddie Gass, 81, of Kendalia, Texas, passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters on March 7, 2022, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was born May 22, 1940, in Kendalia, Texas, to Ella Mae (Mentch) Gass and Erwin Gass and grew up in New Braunfels, Texas.

After graduating from New Braunfels High School in May of 1959, he immediately dedicated himself to the Navy and served from August 1959 to July 1963. His time in the Navy was always something he was very proud and passionate about.

After leaving the Navy, he went back home to New Braunfels and worked with his father at Henke’s Hardware Store and then worked in construction to help build Interstate-10. He met the love of his life, Charlotte Jean Knueper, in Comfort, Texas, in September of 1968 and they married November 22, 1968. They were married for 53 wonderful years.

They moved several times from Comfort, Center Point, New Braunfels and Kerrville and eventually settled back on his family homestead in Kendalia in 1991. During that time, he worked for Swearingen Aviation, Mooney Aircraft and Hoese Corporation. He retired in 2008 but continued ranching on their homestead.

Freddie had many hobbies that he loved, including hunting, fishing, building model ships, puzzles and tinkering in his shop building birdhouses and various yard décor. He was a quiet, but very kind-hearted man. He loved his wife and children with all his heart, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlight of his life who brought him much joy and laughter throughout the years.

Gatherings with his family were always looked forward to, and he always opened his home to any family in need. Freddie was a hard worker and believed in a job well done; he took pride and dedication in all he did.

Freddie is preceded in death by his sister, Esther Mae Shannon, and his parents, Erwin and Ella Mae Gass. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Jean Gass; his three daughters, Donna Beth Archer of Kendalia, Theresa Sue Treiber and husband Bryan Allen Treiber of Harper and Amber Jean Baer and husband Jon Harold Baer of Kendalia; grandchildren Jonathan Thomas Archer and fiancé Brandy Dawn Achilles, Macey Marie Archer and fiancé Nathan Boone, Joshua B. Treiber and wife Rebecca Leanne Treiber, Matthew Lee Treiber, Darrin Micheal Baer and Shelby Lynn Baer and fiancé Peter Charles Robles Jr.;  great-grandchildren Aiden Marcus Espinoza, Karson Lee Archer, Zayla Dawn Archer, Aaron Scott Boone, Emma Marie Boone, Claire Elizabeth Treiber, Abigail Lea Treiber and Chloe Louise Treiber. He is also survived by his brothers, Jimmie Erwin Gass and wife Brenda Gass, and Ronnie Gass and wife Connie Gass.

Funeral services will be held March 25, 2022, at 3 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio to honor his Navy service. The Rev. Wayne R. Mathis will be officiating.
