Saturday’s 45-44 overtime victory over Somerset in Kingsville was twice as nice for the Boerne High boys basketball team.
It’s Boerne’s second win over the Bulldogs this year, it’s also the second year in a row that the Greyhounds have defeated Somerset for the regional title and it also means that BHS has punched its ticket to the state semifinals for the second straight season.
Boerne plays in the 4A state tour nament Friday afternoon in the Alamodome against Wichita Falls Hirschi, 3 p.m.
Saturday’s Region IV-4A title was anybody’s for the taking but Greyhounds coach Kimble McHone said his team gutted out the win.
“I think that’s how we’ve played all season long, that’s who we are,” McHone said. “We’re always believing we’re going to win.”
Boerne was up double digits early in the third, 27-16, but Somerset sliced into the lead and was only trailing by three points going into the fourth at 34-31.
The Bulldogs made it a one-point game at 34-33 early in the fourth, but Barrett Pape hit a 3 for BHS and it was a four-point lead at 37-33.
Pape drilled another 3 later in the period and the Hounds pulled ahead 40-35 with three minutes left but Boerne didn’t score the rest of the stanza and the Bulldogs finished with a 5-0 spurt.
Somerset hit a 2 and was trailing by 3 points, but Matthew Soto, the team’s leading scorer tied it with 12 seconds on the clock to send it to OT.
The Hounds limited the damage Soto did. He usually scores 22 points a game but didn’t record a basket until the fourth quarter on Saturday.
“We did a good job on him all game long,” McHone said.
The coach noted that they had chances to wrap it up in regulation. BHS missed the front end of 1-and-1 free throws twice in the final minutes.
“I wasn’t upset but I was a little disappointed because we could have won it before overtime,” he said.
Once in OT, the Bulldogs scored first and pulled ahead 42-40 for its first lead of the game. From that point on, the Bulldogs only scored two more points and the Greyhounds only added five points in the extra period.
McHone said it played out like a typical Boerne – Somerset game usually does.
“Both teams were fatigued and both teams were familiar with each other,” he said. “It was like a chess match going back and forth.”
Trevor Agarwal had Boerne’s first points in OT after he went 1 for 2 at the line but the Hounds were still trailing, 42-41.
Jaxon Gutierrez dropped in a 2 for the Bulldogs and bumped the lead to 44-41, but those would be Somerset’s final points of the season, while the Hounds scored the final four points of the game.
Devin Styles missed a 3, but retrieved the rebound and put it in for a 2-pointer and the Somerset lead was down to a point with 20 seconds left at 44-43.
Somerset called a timeout and set up an inbounds play but Boerne’s defense forced a turnover on the inbounds pass and it was Boerne’s ball.
The Hounds inbounded and put up a shot and missed but Houston Hendrix grabbed the offensive rebound and laid it in and the Hounds were up 45-44 with just 7 ticks on the clock.
“He’s tenacious on the boards and I think he’s feeling better than he’s been all season,” McHone said of Hendrix.
Somerset had one last look to win it but didn’t get off a good shot and the Greyhounds won. Somerset only shot 5 for 23 from 3-point range as Boerne’s defense made things tough for them.
Styles finished with 18 points, Wolff added 10, Pape had 8, Hendrix scored 6 and Trevor Agarwal had 3 points.
The Hounds dominated on the boards and outrebounded the Bulldogs, 39-21.
Styles and Hendrix grabbed 11 boards each and Pape snagged 9 rebounds and came up with 3 steals.
Vs. Kingsville King
The Greyhounds defeated Kingsville King, 59-40, Friday in the regional semis.
Devin Styles lit it up against King and crowned them with 31 points, while Barrett Pape added 10, Trevor Agarwal netted 9, Koen Wolff scored 5 and Houston Hendrix finished with 4.
Pape added 9 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals and a block to his totals.
Vs. Wichita Falls Hirchi
Boerne (32-6) faces Wichita Falls Hirchi (28-6) and McHone said the Huskies remind him of his team.
“We’re both kind of the same, we both went undefeated in district and defense is what they hang their hat on,” he said. “They had football players that got out there late and like us they’re playing their best basketball now.”
McHone said they are looking forward to the match up.
“Anybody you play at this point is going to be good,” he said. “We just have to go be who we are and believe.”
