Greyhounds take bite out of Bulldogs, 31-7
The visiting Somerset football team played the Greyhounds tough, especially in the first half, but Boerne was able to get some separation in the second half.
The Greyhounds were up 17-7 at halftime but pulled away in the second half with two touchdowns, while the defense didn’t allow a point in the second half to secure a 31-7 win.
Boerne improves to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in district. They’ll close out the regular season Friday in Fredericksburg as they look to wrap up the district title.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said he knew the Bulldogs would play them tough.
“We expected nothing less than their best, they’re a great program. I’m proud of Coach Detmer and what they’ve done other there,” he said. “We expected a very physical playoff-style football game. Both teams are playing for a district championship and it was a great game and we got some separation.”
Boerne had a great start and scored on the first play from scrimmage after TJ Dement sliced through the Somerset defense for a 70-yard sprint to the end zone for the 7-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game.
Boerne’s next drive ended with an interception but on its third possession of the night, Hutson Hendrix punched it in from the 1-yard line to make it 14-0.
The Greyhound started Jaxon Baize at the quarterback spot, brought in Hank Hendrix and then used Hutson Hendrix to run the Wildcat formation.
Coach Hendrix said he didn’t mind using three different quarterbacks in the game. “Jaxon is going to start and play and we’re going to put Hank in and let him play and feel it out from there,” the coach said.
“We’ve used Hut a bunch at that quarterback spot and we haven’t had to the last few games but that’s a big part of our game, getting that short yardage stuff when we need to,” he added.
In the second quarter, Somerset put together an impressive drive for its only points of the game. The Bulldogs marched 89 yards on 16 plays and chewed 6:42 off the clock before Jaden Faz caught a 9-yard TD pass from Koby Isbell, and the lead was cut in half at 14-7.
On Somerset’s scoring drive, Boerne had two 15-yard penalties that gave the Bulldogs key first downs and kept the drive alive.
“They got bailed out with penalties, that was the difference,” Coach Hendrix said.
Boerne answered with a 32-yard Carson Cooper field goal right before the half and took a 17-7 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Hutson Hendrix helped the Hounds pull away after he punched it in twice, both on short quarterback runs from the Wildcat formation, one in each quarter.
Defensively, Dylan Perez and McCoy Bruce both came up with interceptions in the second half. Bruce returned his for a touchdown but it was called back on a penalty, however the pick stood, and it helped Boerne drain the final 3:46 off the clock to secure the win.
Dement finished the game unofficially with 216 rushing yards and a score before leaving with an injury, while Hutson Hendrix tallied 3 TDs, all one 1-yard runs as the Hounds scored in all four quarters.
