Greyhounds hoping to get separation down the stretch
With two games left in the regular season, there’s still a lot to be decided in District 14-4A DI.
Boerne High is 3-0 in league play, while three other squads are 2-1 and the Greyhounds have two of those 2-1 teams left on the schedule – Somerset and Fredericksburg.
BHS finishes out the regular season Friday at home against Somerset and then visits Fredericksburg the following week. Kickoff for Friday’s game with the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
Boerne, Uvalde, Somerset and Fredericksburg will be the four playoff teams from the district, it’s just a matter of what place they finish to determine seeding.
Greyhounds coach Che Hendrix said they’re approaching the final two games like they need to win out.
“I really hadn’t looked at (the standings) that much, I just figured we had to win out,” he said.
Friday’s opponent, Somerset, defeated Kennedy (60-19) and Memorial (62-7) but lost to Fredericksburg (28-21), while the Greyhounds also beat those two schools (Memorial, 42-0) and Kennedy (63-0) and will face Fred next week.
Hendrix said the Bulldogs are huge up front.
“They’re big and they’re physical and they do a good job running the ball and with play action,” he said. “They’re really tough offensively.”
Bulldog Josiah Lugo had four rushing touchdowns last week against the Minutemen. Lugo was hurt in the team’s loss to Fredericksburg but Hendrix said Lugo is back and running well.
“He’s a returning starter and a really good player, he’s tough,” the coach said. “He gets lost behind those big offensive lineman.”
Somerset is 5-3 overall and Hendrix said they are good on defense.
“Defensively, they try to create a lot of chaos up front,” he said. “They try to make it chaotic for you.”
The Hounds took care of Kennedy last week, 63-0, and welcomed back Jaxon Baize, the quarterback who guided the team to the state finals last year as a sophomore.
Baize was eased back in and played the first quarter, while his replacement, Hank Hendrix, played the second quarter.
In the second half, the two QBs rotated series. Baize hurt his foot in the season opener and said it was hard not being on the field.
“Being on the sideline was tough but I’m thankful to my teammates that helped me out and helped me get through it,” he said.
Baize threw two TDs to Dylan Perez and also an interception but Coach Hendrix said the quarterback looked good in his return.
“He got the rust off,” the coach said. “He thew the ball well and made good decisions and feels good and that’s the main thing.”
