Bobcats face tough test at Poth

After a loss last week to Dilley, the Comfort football team is in for another tough game Friday when the Bobcats visit district front runner Poth.

Comfort takes on a Pirates team in Poth that is 7-1 overall and 4-0 district.

Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said they’ll have their hands full at Poth, a team that played in the Class 3A DII state championship game last year and lost to Gunter, 42-7.

“They’re a really good ball club, they’re coached well and do a whole bunch of formations offensively and defensively,” he said.

Comfort still has an outside chance at a district title since they are 3-1 in District 15-3A DII, but it starts with them having to beat Poth, no small task.

“We have to beat Poth by 8 points to have a chance at the district title, but it’s going to be a chore just to beat them, not counting the 8 points,” he said. “We have to play our best football game of the year.”

Rieken said Poth was down a few players early but is firing on all cylinders now.

“They had a few injuries and but now they look like they hadn’t lost a step,” he said.

Comfort is coming off a 26-21 loss at Dilley, a team that lost to Poth in overtime, 10-7. The Bobcats had their chances last week against the Wolves and lost by 5 points, but missed two field goals. They also turned it over on key drives and only had 7 penalties in the game but Rieken added that they were at the worst possible times.

“We’d be driving down and have a penalty,” he said. “What really hurt us is when you have to grind it out for small chunks of yards and are having to start behind the chains.”

Comfort did hold a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but Dilley responded with 20 points in the second and then scored in the third stanza for 26 straight points.

The Cats pulled within 5 points at 26-21 with 2:40 left but that’s as close as they came.

Rieken said the Wolves played them tough.

“They’re a hard-hitting squad and they played good football,” he said. “We were right there but they came up with a scheme that was hard to defend and they figured us out, hats off to them.”
