February was a cool month in Boerne as far as temperatures throughout the 28 days were concerned, but it also was a dry month and the third month in a row that less than one inch of precipitation was recorded in the city.
According to National Weather Service statistics from the New Braunfels office, 0.78 inches of precipitation fell in February, following January’s 0.57 total and December’s 0.73. The total for the first two months of the year – 1.35 inches – is only 35 percent of the normal amount of 3.85 inches.
Boerne experienced above-normal precipitation in 2021 as 41.51 inches was recorded at Boerne Stage Field, or more than 5 inches above the mean.
But the lower-than-average rainfall during the first two months of 2022, combined with a drier-than-normal extended forecast, means drought conditions could worsen as the year progresses if the predictions come true.
Currently, Boerne is in Stage 1 drought conditions, according to information from the Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District. However, it reported that the average water level is 11.21 feet below the February average.
March, on average, gets 2.42 inches of rain.
Rain only fell on six days in February with the 0.37 of an inch on the first day of the month being the maximum. In fact, 0.65 of an inch was recorded during the first four days of February, meaning the last 24 days produced only 0.13 of an inch.
As far as temperatures, the average for the month was 47.1 degrees, or almost 6 degrees below normal. The average high was 61.1 degrees, or 4.4 degrees below normal, while the average low was 33.1, or 7.4 degrees below normal.
A low of 19 degrees was recorded on three consecutive nights from February 4-6. The low dipped below the freezing mark on 16 of the 28 days. On Feb. 22, when the high was 85 degrees, the low was a balmy 61.
The next day, Feb. 23, the high for the month was recorded at 86 degrees. However, that day featured a 53-degree temperature swing as a low of 35 degrees was recorded that night. That led to three days of high temperatures in the 30s before 41 degrees was recorded on Saturday, Feb. 27, followed by 60 degrees on Sunday, Feb. 28.
The short-term forecast calls for a warming trend with highs in the 50s on Tuesday, the 60s on Wednesday and the 70s on Thursday before the next cold front comes through, plunging temperatures back to below normal for this time of the year. Lows should be in the 30s and 40s before potentially dipping into the 20s on Friday night.
