Goodbye summer, hello fall

SPECIAL TO THE STAR

Goodbye summer, hello fall

When temperatures continue to reach into the 90s, it may be difficult to believe that summer is not still in full force. But sure signs of fall are beginning to show.

There are those moments when the breeze sends a soft warmth from the back side of summer, to signal its welcome end. And fall brings much anticipated events to Comfort, so read on.

The Annual Mexican Supper and Festival sponsored by Sacred Heart takes place the first Saturday in October, and this year that’s October 7, beginning at 5 p.m. at Comfort Park, just off Texas Highway 27, between Broadway and Main Streets.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend. It features a $5/ticket raffle with over 100 prizes, and the grand prize is a $600 Visa gift card.

What may well be the largest silent auction ever – with close to 300 items – is also on the agenda. You’ll have to see it to believe it.

There’s something for most everyone on your Christmas list, so come prepared. There are items for kiddos, for guys, for your home, for fun, for function, for frivolity. Also included is a 10-item live auction with a diamond pendant from Americus Diamond, an original painting by Comfort artist Edith Maskey, two fabulous dinners, and more.

The plate dinner features tamales smothered in the best chili this side of the Mississippi River, along with beans, rice and dessert. There are games for the younger set and train rides to boot.

For questions, you are welcome to call the church office at 830-995-3708.

Next up is the long-awaited Annular Eclipse, Saturday, October 14. Comfort’s contribution to the eclipse is an event at Comfort Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department.

You will receive free eclipse glasses and enjoy live music, food and beverage for purchase, and NASA educational activities at the Comfort Public Library that same day.

In addition, a NASA astrophysicist will make a presentation on Friday, October 13, 4:30 p.m. at the library, located on the corner of Seventh and High streets.

We would be remiss if we failed to mention another big October attraction in Comfort – the Annual Scarecrow Invasion.

This is a most delightful occurrence in Comfort, and something worth seeing year after year.

Business owners and residents build unique and creative scarecrows that stand guard against those pesky marauding crows.

The results are most entertaining. Folks come from all around the area to tour the downtown historic district, the residential areas, and out into the countryside.

The event includes a contest, so depending upon when you come, you may see yard signs that announce the winners in various categories. It’s all just a lot of fun and something we look forward to each fall.

Judging will take place mid-October, so the best viewing time is October 15-30.

So have no fear, summer will not go on forever. But Comfort will always be a great place to visit. Remember our saying: You can always find Comfort in Texas!

Till next time, pray for rain.
