Leachman places
2nd at national meet in California
Boerne Champion standout runner Elizabeth Leachman competed at last weekend’s Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in California against some of the nation’s best runners and finished second in the girls sweepstakes division by 0.10.
Leachman had the early lead in the 3-mile race but was eventually caught by Utah’s Jane Hedengren, who finished the race in 15:32.50, while Leachman came in at 15:32.60.
Hedengren, a junior, and Leachman, a sophomore, both shattered the previous meet record set by Sadie Engelhardt, who finished third in the race.
Engelhardt, a junior from Ventura, California, set the record last year with a 15:42.6.
According to Milesplit, Hedengren’s time of 15:32.50 is the “fastest any girl has run for the threemile distance in history.”
