Geneva hosts Shiner St. Paul Friday

Even though the Geneva School of Boerne football team gave up 57 points in last week’s game at Blanco in a 57-35 loss, Eagles coach Grant Gaston said he saw a lot of positive things from his team.

Gaston hopes they can repeat those good things this Friday when they face another tough test against Shiner St. Paul.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday in Boerne at Geneva.

Gaston said it’s a case of the Eagles jumping from the frying pan and into the fire with a game last Friday at Blanco and then a contest this week against Shiner St. Paul.

“Shiner St. Paul has won state two of the last three years and were in the (TAPPS) state final game last year,” he said. “They are well coached and well versed in their system so they know what adjustments to make regardless of how we defend them.”

Despite the score in last week’s game at Blanco, Geneva rolled to 461 yards of offense with 406 yards through the air after Jacob Rosenstiel completed 36 of 54 passes, with 4 of those going for touchdowns.

“We had a lot of positives from the Blanco game. We moved the ball quite well and had two additional deep scoring opportunities that we did not convert into points,” Gaston said. “We also played very tough and gritty against a team with a deeper and older roster and we never backed down or gave up.”

Rosenstiel also ran for a touchdown, while KP Fitzgerald caught 3 TD passes and Brady Chandler had the other touchdown reception.

Gaston said the team is improving like they need to.

“I feel like we were able to hang with Blanco throughout offensively. We just failed to finish two deep drives and turn those into touchdowns and we also gave up a turnover that swung the score against us,” he said. “Each week we are better than the week before and we want to continue that progression throughout the season.”

Another piece of good news is that the Eagles are getting players back from injury.

“We are in pretty good shape injury- wise. We’re getting six players back this week that were out last week for injuries and/or illness,” Gaston said. “So, we’ll have more depth available to rotate and stay fresh.”

The Cardinals are 2-2 with losses to Flatonia and Legacy Prep and wins against TMI-Episcopal and Cedar Hill DasCHE.
