Boerne girls hold off Lady Bulldogs

Whenever Boerne High plays Bandera or Fredericksburg – in any sport – it doesn’t seem to matter what kind of season the Bulldogs or Battlin’ Billies are having, they’ll always play their best to try and top the Greyhounds.

Whenever Boerne High plays Bandera or Fredericksburg – in any sport – it doesn’t seem to matter what kind of season the Bulldogs or Battlin’ Billies are having, they’ll always play their best to try and top the Greyhounds.

That was the case Tuesday when the Bandera volleyball team came to Greyhound Gym to take on Boerne in a district contest.

It was a knock-downdrag- out type of match that went five sets before the Lady Hounds prevailed by the skin of their teeth, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 25-27, 15-13.

The Lady Hounds improved to 17-11 overall and 1-1 in district. Boerne played a non-district match Friday against Clemens and continues 27-4A action Tuesday at Wimberley.

BHS coach Tisha Pettibon said she knows it’s going to be a long night whenever they play Bandera.

“I felt the entire match was like a roller coaster, it was up and down and up and down,” she said. “When we play Bandera and Fred, both teams are going to play good, no matter what. I told our girls, ‘they are going to come and bring it when they walk in the door,’ they always do.”

Boerne won the first and third sets, with the Bulldogs taking the second to give the Hounds a 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set was tied 14 times, the last at 25-25.

Bandera scored the final two points to win it 27-25 and tie it up at 2-2 and send it to the winner-take-all fifth set.

In that final set, the Lady Hounds jumped out to a 10-3 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-0 spurt to pull within a point at 10-9, forcing Pettibon to call a timeout.

The Boerne coach said she wasn’t surprised that Bandera went on a run like they did.

“Last year it was 17-15 in the fifth set, I wasn’t nervous, we just had to take care of business,” she said. “I told them, ‘If we lose, we lose going hard’ and we won going hard. We were swinging to win.”

Boerne was up 11-10 in that fifth set and outscored Bandera, 4-3, to close it out.

Pettibon said Tuesday’s match was a learning experience for her team.

“We’re excited but we know we have stuff we can get better at,” she said. “We needed that win, that was a big-time win. Let’s move on and get ready.”

Haley Wheeler dropped in 5 aces and came up with 9 digs, Ava Rocchio finished with 4 aces, 26 kills, 5 blocks, 3 assists and 19 digs, Paige Stegall recorded 12 kills, Adyson Hudson dished out 27 digs and served 3 aces, Calynn Ramos tallied 49 assists and 14 digs, Aubree Stegall added 10 kills, Kynsie Jones chipped in with 6 kills and 5 digs and Kinsley Sawyer had 10 digs.
