The Boerne High football team will finally play a home game this Friday when the Greyhounds host Gregory- Portland at BISD Stadium, 7 p.m.
It’s also homecoming week for the Hounds as they welcome the 5A Wildcats team that is undefeated and brings a 3-0 mark into the contest.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said it’s finally good to be at home. The coach mentioned that since the turf at the stadium was being replaced last summer, they had to bus to practice at either BMSN or Champion and have basically been on a bus for a while.
“It feels great and I think we’ve handled it pretty good,” he said. “Since July 31, we’ve been on a bus every day, going to practices, two scrimmages and three games.
Everybody is excited to play a home game.”
Hendrix said it’ll be a tough homecoming contest for the Greyhounds. Gregory-Portland enters the contest ranked No 10 in the latest Dave Campbell Texas Football 5A DII poll.
“They’re very balanced, they use a tight end and run the ball well. They have a good outside receiver and when they start running the ball well, they start taking shots down the field,” he said. “They have two outside linebackers who have been starting since they were sophomores. They run sideline to sideline and are hard to block. They have good players and they are tough hard-nosed kids that don’t make a lot of mistakes.”
Boerne High is 2-1 and coming off a 42-35 victory over Antonian. The Hounds have been dealing with injuries this season but are still averaging 41 points a game.
Freshman Hank Hendrix has started the last two games at quarterback for the injured Jaxon Baize and Coach Hendrix said he’s done a good job.
“He’s handled it well, he’s making good decisions and done a good job of managing the game,” the coach said. “When you have an injury, everybody has to step up and it’s a joy for me to see everybody step up and see our team do that.”
T.J. Dement has been one of those stepping up after he finished with 180 yards on the ground on 20 carries in last week’s win at Antonian. Dement is averaging 144 yards per game and has tallied 433 rushing yards so far this year.
Coach Hendrix said they want to be smart with how they use Dement.
“We’ll run him when he needs to run, we try to limit his reps in practice, that’s how we manage that,” the coach said. “We have other backs that are capable and we can use (Dement) as a receiver, it’s hard to take him off the field.”
Hutson Hendrix can also run the ball and he finished with 61 yards on 7 carries and 2 TDs last week. Hank Hendrix threw 2 touchdowns, one to Carson Coffland and another to Gavin Hankins, on catches of 73 and 47 yards. Brooks Perez led the team with 6 catches for 34 yards in the game.
Hutson Hendrix paced the team defensively with 13 tackles, Charlie Stahl had 11 tackles, Carlos Requena added 10 tackles, while Woody Goen and Javi Benavidez both recorded 8 stops.
Coach Hendrix said he’s looking forward to Friday’s game.
“Our homecoming is great here, there are not a lot of towns that continue to have the parade,” he said. “We’re hoping to play our best game and we’re excited to be home.”
