Geneva gets tough test Friday at Blanco

The Geneva School of Boerne football team will face its toughest test of the year so far this Friday when the Eagles visit Blanco.

The Geneva School of Boerne football team will face its toughest test of the year so far this Friday when the Eagles visit Blanco.

Geneva and the Panthers square off Friday, 7 p.m. in Blanco. Both enter the contest with 2-1 marks.

The Eagles are coming off a 35-12 win over La Pryor last Friday in its first home game of the year, while Blanco defeated Comfort, 39-21.

Geneva coach Grant Gaston said Blanco will be the best team they’ve played so far.

“Blanco does everything well,” he said. “They have more speed and elusiveness than any team we’ve faced this season, so we’ll need to be sound in our alignment, assignment and technique this week.”

Gaston said the main thing he wants his team to get better at is finishing games. Last week, the Eagles tallied 35 points by halftime but only had the ball for seven plays in the second half and didn’t score in the final two quarters.

La Pryor went on two clock-chewing drives and held the ball for 21 of the 24 minutes in the second half.

“I thought it was a really good first half. We’re still a young team, so we’re going to work on finishing out,” Gaston said. “I don’t feel like we finished as well as we can in that second half but we’re getting better every week and we’ll be finishing these out before long.”

Geneva had a fast start with two TDs in the first two minutes. K.P. FitzGerald scored both TDs on pass receptions from Jacob Rosenstiel. He finished with 107 receiving yards on 5 catches and added 32 rushing yards on 4 attempts.

FitzGerald also came up with an interception and a fumble recovery on defense and finished with 13 tackles.

“He coaches up the team, he’s like an extra coach on the field,” Gaston said. “The kids love him, respect him, look up to him and he plays with his heart. He’s the heart and soul of our team.”

Rosenstiel tossed four TDs on 10 of 15 attempts for 193 yards, while Brady Chandler caught 2 TD passes and Noah Brunsvold rushed 8 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Jake Plesko led the Geneva defense with 14 tackles.

Gaston said it wasn’t a perfect game but added that they are moving in the right direction.

”I thought our team did a great job of implementing our game plan and correcting a lot of mistakes from the prior week,” he said. “That’s the mark of a good team – we are consistently improving week to week.”

It was Geneva’s first home game and Gaston said it was fun to be at home.

“It was great, we had all our fans out here with all the tailgating. All the great food, it was a great atmosphere,” Gaston said. “We hadn’t been home since our scrimmages and scrimmages don’t have the same feel as a home game so this was our first real home Geneva experience, it was fantastic.”
