Comfort takes on Brackett for homecoming

Even though the Comfort football team is 0-3, Bobcats head coach Jay Rieken said they’ve gotten a whole lot better in the last three weeks.

Even though the Comfort football team is 0-3, Bobcats head coach Jay Rieken said they’ve gotten a whole lot better in the last three weeks.

Rieken said he’s confident their improved play will start resulting in wins. He’s hoping it’ll be sooner than later as the Bobcats get ready to start district play next week.

Before that, Comfort hosts Brackett this Friday for its final non-district contest. It’s also homecoming week for the Bobcats.

Blanco defeated Comfort 39-21 last Friday but Rieken said they took a big step forward in the loss.

“We got better last Friday, we played for four quarters and the kids played really hard. Things didn’t fall our way, but we made a drastic improvement,” Rieken said. “We started to come together (last) week and grew up a little bit. We played harder and our kids improved, they never had their heads down and they kept battling.”

Comfort was trailing 20-7 at halftime but did score two second half TDs as they kept battling.

Gio Lopez had a 7-yard TD run in the first half, Micah Nye added a touchdown scamper and Topper Sterling went 40 yards on a fourth-quarter run.

Comfort has 21 first downs last week, while Blanco had 16 them. The Bobcats rushed for 341 yards and have tallied 982 yards on the ground in its first three games so they’ve been able to move the ball, they just haven’t been able to finish games. Part of that equation is being injured.

“We still have the injury bug, we’re still trying to get healthy but at one point last week we had two freshman in the backfield,” he said. “We can’t afford another injury and we’re about 2 or 3 weeks away from getting people back.”

In last year’s game, Brackett thumped the Bobcats 58-24, but Rieken said the Tigers are young this year.

“They only have seven or eight seniors and have a whole bunch of sophomores and juniors,” he said. “But they are hard-nosed kids, they’re a good South Texas football team.”

Brackett runs the spread and Rieken said they run it well, but don’t do much else.

“They’re simple at what they do and they do it really, really well,” he said. “They don’t do a whole lot of different things but what they do, they do well.”

Comfort has only scored three touchdowns in each game and can’t get past that 20-to-21-point mark. They’ve tallied 20, 21 and 21, something Rieken said they need to improve on. There are a few other areas he said they need to tweak this week.

“Defensively, we have to set the edge better and get better at tackling,” he said. “We also need to execute and pass protect a whole lot better and get out of that 20-point range.”

NOTES: Because of the burn ban, there will not be a bonfire for this year’s homecoming. Rieken said he can’t remember the last time they didn’t have one.
