The Boerne Champion Chargers scored early and often at Canyon Lake and then overcame sloppy play, personal fouls calls and a brief attempt at a comeback to remain undefeated on the season with a convincing 42-21 win Friday.

Right out of the chute the Chargers (3-0) took it to the undermanned Canyon Lake (1-2) squad, with a large segment of its players lining up on offense and defense.

Champion took the opening kick and drove 75 yards in six plays, capped by a Cole Riha 5-yard touchdown run just 1:36 into the game for the quick 7-0 lead.

Canyon Lake started deep in their own territory and a third-down interception by Tony Graves gave the Chargers the ball on the Hawks 20-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Jordan Ballin found Riha wide open on a flare route, connecting for a 25-yard TD and a 14-0 lead just 3:32 into the game.

After both teams exchanged drives, Canyon Lake drove into Charger territory but had to punt. On the first play of the second quarter, receiver Sawyer Bolli took a handoff from Ballin right up the middle and dashed 51 yards for a score to run the Charger lead to 21-0.

Canyon Lake finally hit paydirt on its next drive, with running back Justin Abbott carrying in from 15 yards out on a drive kept alive by Champion penalties, including two personal fouls and an offsides on a 3rd-and-1 play.

With 3:58 left before halftime, Grant Menzies recorded a Pick-Six, stepping in front of the Canyon Lake quarterback’s pass and taking it 12 yards into the end zone for a 28-7 lead that stood at half.

But Canyon Lake would not go away, as the Hawks’ Caden Rodriguez bulled in from 3 yards out with 8:32 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-14.

Champion punted on its next possession before Canyon Lake started driving. But the Charger defense stiffened and forced a punt, giving the offense the ball inside its own 20.

On the last play of the third quarter, Ballin hit Bolli in stride for an 82-yard touchdown, but the play was nullified by a holding penalty. Two plays later, the Ballin-to-Bolli connection hooked up again, as the quarterback hit his wide receiver in stride for an 85-yard touchdown on a perfectly executed fly route, extending the lead to 35-14.

That TD, on the second play of the fourth quarter, deflated the Canyon Lake squad. Once Champion got the ball back, Ballin-to-Bolli struck again, this time from 30 yards out and for another six points, giving Champion an insurmountable 42-14 lead with just over six minutes to play.

Canyon Lake tacked on a late touchdown, but the Chargers put this one in the win column in convincing fashion.

The undefeated Chargers return home this week to host New Braunfels Canyon at Boerne ISD Stadium in a Thursday night clash.
