The varsity tennis teams from Boerne High and Boerne Champion were in action Wednesday with the Greyhounds on the road and the Chargers at home.

Boerne High was scheduled to play a home district match against Bandera but the Bulldogs didn’t field a fall team so the Greyhounds hit the road for a non-district match at Mason.

Champion was at home Wednesday in a showdown with archrival Alamo Heights in a battle of regional heavyweights.

Both teams were back on the court Friday for home matches. The Chargers hosted Houston Kingwood and the Hounds hosted Health Careers.

The Chargers entered the season ranked No. 10 in the state and No. 1 in Region IV in the 5A Texas Tennis Coaches Association preseason poll, while Alamo Heights isn’t a member of the association and wasn’t ranked.

That didn’t stop the Mules from defeating the Chargers Wednesday evening, 10-6, to drop Champion’s record to 6-2 overall.

Alamo Heights jumped out to a 4-1 lead but Champion won two girls doubles matches and trimmed the lead to 4-3 to complete doubles play.

Once it went into the singles matches, the Mules pulled ahead 5-3, then it was 5-4 and 6-4 before Alamo Heights won four of the next six matches to close it out.

The Chargers and the Mules met last year in the regional finals with Heights winning the regional title to advance to state. They could meet again this year in the playoffs as well.

BHS coach Tyson Stewart wanted his team to play Wednesday and since Bandera didn’t field a fall team, Stewart took his squad to play Mason.

Boerne and Mason played all 19 matches possible and the Greyhounds rolled to a 15-4 win over the Punchers.

BHS improves its record to 5-3 overall.

They hosted Health Careers Friday.
