After qualifying both the boys and girls varsity cross country teams to last year’s 4A state meet in Round Rock, Greyhounds coach Chris Carter believes they can use that as a stepping stone to accomplish even greater things this year.
Carter said the program has been moving in the right direction the last couple of seasons.
“ I absolutely feel like they will build on the success of last year. Two years ago our team came away from regionals and set state as a goal. I feel like each year the team has taken a step forward,” he said. “The seniors are great leaders and have really encouraged our younger runners to push and improve. The team as a whole has put in great work in the spring and summer with their sights on the fall.”
This year’s BHS boys varsity team is one of the best the program has seen in a while and Carter said there’s a lot of potential there.
“The boys are the deepest we have been in perhaps 10 years. They have the potential to be pretty special,” he said. “Success will be measured by how much they improve from now until the end of the season. Everyone gets better is the mantra. Do that and everything else takes care of itself.”
A look at the district Carter said they are in a tough district and there are some good running programs they have to compete against in district and beyond.
“On both boys and girls side, Davenport is a very good program, they continue to improve each season and have some move-ins that have added to that building culture,” he said. “Fred on the girl’s side has been a state medalist for the last two years and the Bandera boys have made the trip to state over the last few seasons and always seem to find a way out of the region.” The coach said the girls team will have to be ready to battle this year.
“The girls have perhaps the roughest road in the region, our district is incredibly competitive amongst the state. Our girls have to continue to improve. We need to tighten up 1 through 7, we can’t afford to have girls let the girl in front of them go,” Carter said. “Some of that is confidence and some of that is training, they have put in a great spring and summer and should be improved as a team.”
Runners to watch Carter said there are several runners on the boys and girls side to keep an eye on this year.
“On the girl’s side, the three leaders are Eleanor Davis, Mary Marino, and Endie Boddie,” he said. “On the boys side Tayson Farar, Jackson Temple and Carsten Bain are the early leaders, but both girls and boys are tight 1 through 5.”
