Samuel Clemens once penned, “Be good and you will be lonesome.” Obviously, this could be an accurate summation of the condition of humankind.
As we all know, standing up for goodness can indeed be isolating. As always exceptions abound and exist to level out life’s givens.
For 50-plus years we have been treated with the always uplifting, insightful, subtle yet keenly accurate, life observations as described by singer songwriter James William Buffett.
Jimmy had millions of people who liked him despite all of his attempts at the power of positive thinking. JB never dug into politics or race or insults; ever-smiling, ever-loving.
Many of us can hardly recall a day when his wit and wisdom failed to snatch us from any doldrums that beset our lives.
From his early busking days in New Orleans to his worldwide fame, he never let us down until nowthis past week we lost him to the dreaded cancer. But in true Jimmy style, upon his death he released yet another epistle of encouragement: “Bubbles up will point your way home no matter how deep or how far you roam.”
So, take a moment to listen to his huge body of Renaissance work. Take his advice and “listen to the juke box for your answers, eat the last mango in Paris, and take the last plane out of Saigon.”
We could ask God to bless his soul, but it seems he already has.
