All four Kendall County varsity football teams will be back in action Friday as they play their third games of the season.
Two of the teams are playing at home for the first time this year, while another is playing its third straight on the road.
Geneva School of Boerne
After two straight on the road, Geneva School of Boerne will be in Boerne Friday for its home debut, 7 p.m.
The Eagles host La Pryor and are coming off their first loss of the season to stand at 1-1.
Geneva won its opener 63-0 after scoring nine touchdowns but the Eagles’ offense was kept off the board last week at Dilley.
The Wolves won the game, 23-7, and Geneva’s only score came on an interception return by JonMichael Raimondo in the second quarter.
The Eagles were trailing 10-7 at the half but gave up two TDs in the second half, one of them on a punt return for 66 yards by Dorian Aranda.
La Pryor is in a very similar situation like Geneva with a blowout win and a big loss in its first two games to stand at 1-1 also.
The Bulldogs lost to Iraan, 38-0, in its opener but bounced back last week at Pettus, 34-6.
Geneva coach Grant Gaston said La Pryor runs the Wing-T offense very well.
“La Pryor runs a deceptive Wing-T type system that will require us to maintain our discipline on defense,” he said. “They are solid on defense and do not give up big plays.”
After scoring nine TDs in its opener, Gaston said they weren’t able to finish last Friday.
“We need to work on finishing plays and drives. We are very-very close and correcting the little but critical things required to finish each play and each drive will pay dividends throughout the season,” he said.
Comfort High
Like Geneva, the Comfort football team has been on the road for its first two games and will be making its home debut Friday when they welcome arch-rival Blanco, 7 p.m.
The Bobcats enter the contest at 0-2 but had its chances last week against another rival, Ingram.
Comfort jumped out to a 21-0 first-half lead against the Warriors but gave up 28 unanswered second-half points and lost, 28-21.
The Bobcats have put up good numbers in its two losses and tallied 334 total yards last week, including 253 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Topper Sterling had a scoop and score for the Cats in that first half, while Mason West and Micah Nye both scored rushing touchdowns. West also had a 69-yard catch in the game.
Blanco is 1-1 and beat Poth, 27-23, and lost to Antonian, 37-27, last week.
Comfort coach Jay Rieken said Blanco is always tough.
“They are very physical and execute very well,” he said.
Rieken noted that they also need to execute better on the basics and fundamentals.
“We have to eliminate turnovers, overcome adversity and cut out the penalties,” he said.
The Bobcats had 13 penalties last week for 140 yards.
Boerne High
The Greyhounds are in San Antonio for its third straight road game when they visit Antonian Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Boerne is coming off a lopsided victory over Pleasanton last Friday, 47-7, for its first win of the year and enters the contest at 1-1, while the Apaches are undefeated at 2-0 with wins over Holy Cross and Blanco and have scored 84 points in its two victories.
The Hounds scored in every quarter last week and it was the debut of Hank Hendrix at the quarterback spot. The freshman QB, who is taking over for the injured Jaxon Baize, helped the offense roll to 371 yards and he was 13 for 16 through the air with one touchdown.
His dad and coach said he was sharp in his debut.
“Hank did a good job of managing the game and making good decisions and made good accurate throws,” Coach Hendrix said. “I’m proud of the entire team for stepping up.”
Hutson Hendrix and TJ Dement both scored two touchdowns each, while the BHS special teams/ defense came up with a safety and only allowed 209 total yards in the game.
“I thought we would play well,” Coach Hendrix said. “We had a great week of practice.”
Boerne Champion
The Chargers are the only undefeated team in the county after they improved to 2-0 with last week’s 27-26 win over Eagle Pass. They also beat United South in its opener at Laredo, 37-27.
Champion visits Canyon Lake Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
The Hawks are 1-1 and have been a Jekyll – Hyde kind of a team this year. They were whipped by Wimberley, 60-6, but won a shootout with Fredericksburg, 52-43, last week.
Chargers coach Blane Ellis likes how his team is playing as they enter Friday’s contest.
“We faced United South and Eagle Pass, they were physical teams and they made us better,” he said. “Both of them are 6As and they are both hard-nosed and well coached. We definitely got better over the last couple of weeks and we’re looking forward to getting better (this) week.”
Champion fell behind 19-7 last week but outscored the Eagles 20-7 in the second half. They were trailing 20-26 when the fourth quarter started but made several key plays in the stanza to win the game.
Eagle Pass had a 1st and goal at the Champion 3-yardline but Grant Menzies came up with a fumble recovery.
Later, with less than four minutes in the contest, Jordan Ballin connected on a 57-yard bomb to Campbell DeBerry for the go-ahead touchdown, and later, Ballin pinned the Eagles back at their own 3-yard line with a punt that was downed by Hudson Simmons to force Eagle Pass to try and go 97 yards with only 35 ticks on the clock and no timeouts. They weren’t able to.
Champion was helped by two missed Eagles extra points in the game.
Ellis said he was proud of how his team fought back after falling behind 19-7.
“The kids never shut it down, we never let it die and stayed in it, that was tremendous by our guys,” he said.
