Chargers race at Chaparral XC Invite at Westlake HS

Leachman turns in one of the fasted times in nation

It may have been Champion’s first cross country meet of the year but several of its varsity runners looked to be in championship form at last Friday’s Chaparral XC Invite in the Austin area and hosted by Westlake.

On the girls side, Elizabeth Leachman blew away the field at the meet, while the Charger boys also looked sharp as they ran to a first-place team finish.

Leachman clocked in at 16:34.10 to win the individual title and beat the second-place runner by more than two minutes.

The Lady Chargers finished fifth as a team, while the Champion boys won their race by 16 points.

Champion was scheduled to race in the FEAST Invitational Saturday morning over Labor Day weekend.

Champion girls

Leach man’s time of 16:34.10 would have been the second fastest in the nation last year for a high school girl and it would have been a top 5 time in the last several years, according to head coach Jonathan Tate.

Leachman’s time helped the Lady Chargers to a fifth-place finish with 132 points.

Georgetown was first (63), Fredericksburg second (84), Dripping Springs third (114) and NB Canyon fourth (118).

Kynley Albright placed 17th in 20:31.30, Jenna Koepke ran a 20:55.80 for 24th, Breanna Hempton clocked in at 21:26.60 for 44th, Kiley Johnson posted a 21:30.30 and was two spots back in 46th, while Luciana Zazueta Ibarra came in 55th at 21:55.60 and Grace Mondini finished in 23:44.80 for 83rd in a field of 154 runners.

Champion boys

The Charger boys tallied 59 points to beat Georgetown (75) by 16 points, while Lake Travis came in third (108) in a field of 25 teams.

Champion had two runners in the top 10 and its scoring 5 all finished in the top 20.

Luis Tovar placed 4th in 16:01.50, Charles Houck was 9th in 16:36, Caleb Dehart finished in 16:39.90 for 12th, Luke Grametbauer ran a 16:49.70 for 15th and William Coover posted a 16:54.60 for 59th place, while Ben Matamoros was 27th in 17:07.60 and Patrick Thornton was one spot back in 28th at 17:09.
