The Boerne High volleyball team received a good mid-season test Tuesday when they hosted No. 4 state-ranked 4A Floresville at Greyhound Gym.

Floresville brought an impressive 21-2 mark into Tuesday’s contest and while BHS competed well against the Lady Tigers, they weren’t able to take a game and lost in straight sets.

The Lady Tigers won 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 as they improved to 22-2, while the Lady Hounds drop to 15-8 this year. BHS visited South San Friday.

Boerne coach Tisha Pettibon said playing a good team exposes areas to work on and she noted that she saw a few. The main need right now is finding someone to finish plays or as she calls them, a “terminator.”

“We’re making good defensive plays but we’re not able to terminate. We’re not doing the things we need to do to terminate,” she said. “We’re trying to do things we shouldn’t do instead of scoring the point and putting them out of system when we can. I need an offensive leader, that’s what we’re missing.”

Boerne opens district play next week, Sept. 8, and Pettibon said they’ve improved since the season started but knows they can get better.

“We have played amazing volleyball to this point; the team gelled (last) weekend and we had a lot of team bonding (at the Godley tournament),” she said. “We knew it was going to be a tough match (Tuesday vs. Floresville) and we didn’t execute in the end and didn’t finish sets. If we can fix that we’ll be fine.”

Pettibon said the main thing is getting her team experience.

“Only one player on my team has even been to the playoffs, it was Ava Rocchio, and she didn’t play (two years ago vs. Pleasanton),” Pettibon said. “If they want it, they’re going to have to go earn it. We have a good defensive leader in Adyson (Hudson) but I need an offensive leader out there, I need someone to hold people accountable on the court.”

Calynn Ramos led the team in aces (3), assists (15) and added 7 digs, Rocchio finished with 10 kills and 4.5 blocks, Paige Stegall tallied 8 kills, while Hudson came up with 16 digs and Kinsley Sawyer chipped in with 7 assists.
