September 16th is lining up to be a fun-filled day in Comfort, so mark your calendars and plan to head on over.
Your first stop needs to be the outdoor plaza of Just Chillin’ in Comfort, situated at the corner of Seventh and High streets. There you will find Comfort Empty Bowls, all set up and ready for business at 10 a.m. for your participation in ‘The Empty Bowls Project.”
There is a catch, however: You must procure your tickets before you arrive, and that is not difficult. But first, allow me to convince you that you really want to do this.
The Empty Bowls Project is a grassroots movement that began in 1990, and whose purpose is to help alleviate hunger.
It works like this: Several area artists make and donate beautifully hand-crafted bowls to the project. You, the customers and supporters, purchase tickets at $25 each. For each ticket, you get to take home the bowl of your choice. 100% of the money collected will go to the Comfort Table and Food Pantry.
The organizers are sure to have bowls a ‘plenty for each ticket purchased.
To top it all off, after you select your bowl that will be carefully wrapped by volunteers, you will receive a scoop of hand-made authentic gelato, compliments of Skyline Gelato.
Tickets are available at Food for the Soul (Seventh and High streets), at the Comfort Chamber of Commerce (630 Front St.), and online at: www.comforttablepantry.org. Next, be sure to take in the 11th annual Comfort Art Festival, which runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Many local and area artists will display their creations throughout the Comfort Historic District.
Local shops along High and Seventh streets will sponsor an artist or maybe two, and these talented and creative folks will be inside or outside or alongside the various shops. You’ll be able to view their work and purchase your favorite pieces.
If you are interested in a preview of some of the art you will see at the festival, check out the Facebook page for Comfort Art Festival. Several of the participating artists are named along with images of their work.
One of the exciting things about Comfort is the appreciation of our local artists and their work. We draw many talented folks to our community, as well as countless people who are eager to grace their homes and offices with original art. So do plan to amble through the Historic District and drink in the beauty around you.
Finally, top off this fabulous day with Mexican Kermesse, set for 4-9 p.m. at the old church grounds of Sacred Heart, 510 Broadway.
The area will be hopping with booth after booth of authentic Mexican food and beverages. Enjoy tamales, gorditas, raspas, enchiladas, pozole, tostadas --the list goes on and on.
All of the food is homemade by parishioners of Sacred Heart, and each of them will donate the proceeds of their sales to help fund a new building that will house offices, classrooms and a community space.
One day, hopefully not too far down the road, you may be able to enjoy Mexican Kermesse in that new facility. But in the meantime, don’t miss this fun event. There will be music and dancing and fun for all.
Saturday, Sept. 16, is a day not to be-missed in Comfort. We look forward to seeing you there ‘Til next time, remember that you can always find Comfort in Texas.
