Hounds visit Pleasanton as they battle through injuries

Injuries are part of athletics and one of the reasons the Boerne High football team had a great season in 2022 was because they managed to stay relativity injury free during their historic run to the state finals.

But just one week into the 2023 season and the Hounds are already dealing with injuries like they never had to last year.

BHS will be without starting QB Jaxon Baize for several weeks after he suffered a foot injury in last week’s season opener in Flour Bluff. They also have a few other injuries they’ve been dealing with as well.

Greyhounds coach Che Hendrix said he knows it’s part of the game and the team will do the best they can going forward.

“We’ve already had our share of stuff to go through in the first three weeks of the season compared to 16 weeks last year,” he said. “That was a huge part of (last year’s historic run), that was a once in a lifetime as far as injuries, we had some soft tissue injuries but nothing that knocked a kid out for the year and we’ve already had our share of injuries this year.”

As of early this week, Hendrix hadn’t named a starter at the quarterback spot and said he might wait until game day to do it.

Whoever it is will start under center Friday when the Greyhounds visit Pleasanton.

Boerne faced the Eagles twice last year, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs and beat them both times. The Hounds won their non-district contest, 41-7 and then clipped the Eagles in the second- round of the playoffs, 50-21.

Pleasanton lost some “heart and soul players” as Hendrix called them, guys who had been on varsity for four seasons, but said he expects a great effort from them on Friday when the Hounds come for a visit.

“They’re similar to last year, they’re always very solid,” he said. “They usually have a solid line. They have a new quarterback this year and he thew the ball pretty well in scrimmages.”

The Eagles beat Devine last week 24-13 and scored 24 points in a row after falling behind 7-0.

The Hounds had a see-saw battle with Flour Bluff last Friday before falling 35-28.

BHS was trailing 21-7 at one point but scored three straight TDs to take the lead at 28-21. The game had six ties or lead changes before the Hornets pull away.

Hendrix said they need to clean up a few areas.

“We played great at times and we didn’t play well at times. It’s hard to win when you have 15 penalties and there were times when we had five or six busts offensively and defensively that we can get better at,” he said. “You have to battle through all of that and I’m proud of our guys for staying in the fight. We can go address those things.”

T.J Dement had a great game on the ground and rushed for 176 yards on 23 carries and scored 3 TDs, while Brooks Perez caught 6 passes for 167 yards and 2 scores.

Hutson Hendrix finished with 15 tackles, Javier Benavidez added 12 tackles, McCoy Bruce had 11 stops and Charlie Stahl finished with 10 tackles and an interception, while Mason Stewart also had a pick.

After Baize hurt his foot, he stayed in the game to finish it out and the coach said that’s a testament to his character.

“When you have kids willing to do that and battle through that, they care about the team,” Hendrix said. “That’s why he did it because he cares about his team.”
