Geneva plays at Dilley and wants to build on big win

Even though his team scored 63 points in last week’s season opener, Geneva School of Boerne football coach Grant Gaston said there’s plenty to work on as the Eagles head into their second game of the season.

Even though his team scored 63 points in last week’s season opener, Geneva School of Boerne football coach Grant Gaston said there’s plenty to work on as the Eagles head into their second game of the season.

“There are always areas for improvement, from seniors down to freshmen,” he said. “We need to keep honing our fundamentals and really finish plays.

Geneva visits Dilley this Friday and both teams are 1-0 after they won their openers last week. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Dilley.

Geneva claimed a 63-0 win over Harmony School of Innovation in Katy last Friday, while Dilley doubled up Sabinal, 41-20.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolves scored 20 points in the second period, the first 6 on a 90-yard interception return. They added 21 second-half points in the second half, 6 more on another Pick-6.

“Dilley is very well coached,” Gaston said. “Coach Silva is building a tremendous program at Dilley. They are in their third year under him, so they are well coached and know their schemes inside and out. They play very fast and quick.”

While Dilley didn’t score in the first quarter, the Eagles didn’t have that problem last week. Geneva was up 28-0 by the end of the opening period and held a 42-0 lead by halftime. They tacked on three more TDS in the third quarter and then eased off the gas pedal and didn’t score in the final stanza.

Gaston said one of the benefits of such a lopsided game is that he was able to play everybody. Without a JV team this year, the coach was able to let some of his freshmen and sophomores get game-time experience.

“The No. 1 thing was having the opportunity for many of our younger guys to get meaningful reps,” he said. “It was good to see some of our freshmen like Carter Doan, Caleb Quitadamo, Reid Aderholt and Brandt Allen step up.”

While the Geneva offense tallied 9 touchdowns in last Friday’s game, the defense also played well and came up with 6 turnovers – 3 fumbles and 3 interceptions.
