The Geneva School of Boerne has a new volleyball head coach but it’s someone who has been around the program for a while.

Madison Nagy takes over the program and has been the assistant coach at Geneva for the last several years. Nagy replaces Shelly Vaughn, who was the head coach for six season before stepping down after last year.

The new Eagles head coach said so far everything has gone smooth.

“The transition from assistant coach to varsity head coach has been fantastic. Geneva has been a huge blessing in my life, and I have loved the community it has brought me,” she said. “I knew I always wanted to have the opportunity to lead this varsity team one day because of the fantastic culture Geneva volleyball has and the life long memories that come along with it.”

Because of her familiarity with the program, Nagy said she’s not making too many changes but admits there will be a few differences.

“I have not made a ton of changes to the program, like I mentioned earlier, the culture Geneva volleyball has goes unmatched, so I didn’t want to re-invent the wheel there,” she said. “But we are in a new era of Geneva volleyball with standout Karynn Garrow graduating last year so I knew I would have to come in and identify some leaders and provide knowledge and tools to play at the same level we have been playing at the last four years. I have spruced up our offensive system, and brought a lot of volleyball IQ trainings and strategies into our program in order to play to our highest potential.”

A look at the team

Geneva has four seniors on this year’s team and they are Emily Coultress, Kenzie Cates, Cammy Curtis and Lily Kaiser.

Nagy said she expects a lot out of them, both on and off the court.

“I am leaning in on our four seniors to step up and lead this team to be everything they want it to be,” she said.

Juniors are Chloe Caulfield, Kate Friesenhahn, Lily Flora, sophomores are Ella Grace Owens, Sopris Oglesby, Maggie Diemund and Elle Chalmers, while two freshman, Emerson Myrick and Hartlee Menn, round out the team.

Nagy said players to watch are Kaiser, Friesenhahn, Owens and Myrick.

“(Myrick) is going to be one to keep your eye on,” Nagy added.

Goals and district foes Nagy said she has a lot of goals for her team in her first season as head coach.

“Some goals I have for this season are to obviously win out the regular district play and go into the district tournament with a strong seeding in hopes of securing a playoff run,” she said. “I want this team to go to the playoffs and prove to themselves that they can bind together and that they are capable of achieving all of their hopes and dreams.”

District opponents include Brentwood Christian School, Corpus Christi John Paul II, Holy Cross, Corpus Christi Incarnate Word, Texas School for the Deaf, Veritas, Schertz John Paul II and Hill Country Christian.

Nagy said Brentwood and CC John Paul II “are going to be tough competitors.”
