It seems that the Washington bureaucracy is always a day late and a dollar short. A recent Gallup poll shows 70 percent of Americans think the pandemic is over; 89 percent of Republicans think so.
Yet, just last month the feds finally offered “free” COVID test kits, but the test kits arrived in homes late, if ever. And last week they relaxed mask guidelines, somewhat. It reminds me of the lyrics to a country song – “It’s a little too late to do the right thing now.”
Voters are fed up with the Washington swamp. But what to do? Well, our Kendall County Republican voters know that local politics is the foundation of our democracy. It all starts at the local level: county, city, school board. We get involved, and we vote. We are known statewide for high turnout and well-informed voters.
We just had a vigorous, dynamic Republican primary election campaign. We are blessed in Kendall County where talented folks step up to serve in public office. It’s a tough slog, campaigning for our votes. We salute all our candidates for their heart for public service and their perseverance.
The primary campaign season is fairly short, effectively a six-week period before the first day of early voting. And during that time there were more than a dozen Republican candidate forums around the county; our Kendall County GOP alone hosted nine of them. We had standing room crowds for these high-energy events.
A famous journalist once said, “Everyone is entitled to my opinion.” Republicans have differences of opinion, naturally, because we are independent-minded folks. I often remind our voters that our candidates are our friends and neighbors, folks we see in our communities. We are fortunate to have candidates and public officials who are accessible to us, the people.
The wise old saying, “You find what you’re looking for” certainly applies to politics. If you’re looking for false rumors, gossip, innuendo and bad behavior, you will find it. On the other hand, if you are looking for selfless service, principled decisions, patriotism and dedication to our democratic processes, you will find plenty of that here in Kendall County. I found lots of those positives in this campaign.
Here are a few.
Our youngest voters were born after the September 11, 2001, attacks. They have not known a world without terrorism.
They want a robust national defense. They want the government to spend within its means, and they worry about the massive government debt that is left for them to pay. They want a government that stays out of their way so they can pursue their happiness.
These young conservative Republicans have a wonderful heart for democracy. Their energy is contagious.
Our oldest voters witnessed the stock market crash and the Great Depression. Their continued dedication to their civic duty is inspiring. We had 12 voters over age 100 who voted in the last election! Their legacy is very important to them. They set a great example for the rest of us.
I helped an elderly voter with some election questions. I complimented her interest and involvement. Then, in a very firm voice, she informed me that she had not missed an election, starting in 1952. And she voted Republican in every single one! God bless you, ma’am.
I met numerous young voters who cast a ballot for the very first time. I met a new American citizen who will do likewise. Their excitement and love of country is obvious. They are America’s future.
Our election workers do an amazing job, and they deserve our thanks for their dedication and diligence. They serve on the front lines at the polls, ensuring that elections run smoothly, and that every single vote is legal and is counted accurately. They are sworn to uphold Texas election laws. As a matter of fact, they each take that oath on Election Day.
The Kendall County Elections Office is a dedicated and skilled team that works tirelessly to prepare and conduct our elections. I have witnessed their work up close for several years, and it is an awesome sight. They are dedicated to conducting each of our elections with integrity and accuracy. We are blessed to have them.
Yes, many positives in our primary election, all around us. I am proud to serve in our community with these fine citizens. All of us doing our part to continue the traditional conservative Republican governance in Kendall County.
Well done, all y’all!
Scott S. Kramer is chairman of the Republican Party of Kendall County.
