Boerne High, Comfort and Providence opened their 2023 volleyball seasons Tuesday at Greyhound Gym as all three teams played matches against each other.

Boerne High went 2-0, Providence posted a 1-1 mark and Comfort dropped both matches to start the year at 0-2.

The Lady Hounds and Comfort Deer are entered in tournaments this weekend. BHS is at Northside and the Deer visit Natalia.

Boerne High

The Lady Greyhounds defeated Providence, 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 25-11 and then swept Comfort, 29-27, 25-15, 25-9.

BHS coach Tisha Pettibon said she was glad her team won but added that her squad is young and is learning how to play together.

“This team has never played together so at the beginning of the season you’re trying to develop chemistry and work through matches and sets,” she said. “When you get down, you have to fight back and scrape your way back into it. It teaches adversity early on and it forces kids to pump each other up and have teamwork.”

BHS missed 11 serves in one set against Comfort but still won the game as they adjusted. They went on to dropped in 23 aces against the Deer in the match.

“We missed 11 serves in one set but they fixed that so we’re learning,” Pettibon said.

Against Comfort, Hayley Wheeler recorded 8 aces, Kinsley Sawyer had 5 aces, Holly Reeder and Adyson Hudson both netted 3 aces, Morgan Naylor had 2 aces, while Presley Mullins and Paige Stegall dropped in 1 ace apiece.

Aubree Stegall and Paige Stegall tallied 8 kills each, Sawyer finished with 10 assists and Naylor had 8 assists. Paige Stegall and Hudson came up with 13 digs each and Ava Rocchio added 12 digs and had a block.

Against Providence, Ava Rocchio led the team with 18 digs, 6 aces and 10 kills, Paige Stegall had 14 kills and 14 digs, Aubree Stegall added 11 kills, Calynn Ramos finished with 16 assists, Morgan Naylor tallied 14 assists and Kinsley Sawyer had 12 assists, while Hudson had a team-high 23 digs and Haley Wheeler had 14 digs.

Comfort

The Deer almost took the first set off BHS, but the Lady Hounds won the game 29-27 and then closed it out, 25-15, 25-9.

Comfort did take a set off Providence but the Provets won in four, 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19.

Deer coach Norma Viera said she’s rotating a lot of players in and out as she looks for a set line up.

“By the second tournament we should have a set rotation,” she said. “I’ll see who is the most consistent.”
