Wisian vs. Brimhall in GOP Pct. 2 commissioner runoff

Andra Wisian took a strong lead in the polls in Tuesday’s GOP March primary and is set to face off against Leon Brimhall in a May 24 runoff election for the Kendall County Precinct 2 commissioner seat.

Andra Wisian took a strong lead in the polls in Tuesday’s GOP March primary and is set to face off against Leon Brimhall in a May 24 runoff election for the Kendall County Precinct 2 commissioner seat.

Of the 2,366 votes cast in the Precinct 2 commissioner primary election, Wisian received 1,170, or 49.45 percent, missing an outright win by just over half a percentage point. Coming in second behind Wisian was Brimhall, who received 630, or 26.63 percent, of the votes. The two candidates are expected to have their names on a second round of primary elections in May.

Garry Manitzas, the former mayor of Fair Oaks Ranch, was knocked off the primary ballot by Brimhall and Wisian, pulling in 566, or 23.92 percent, of the votes.

“With 49.45% of the vote, I am very grateful to everyone who voted for me as well as all my campaign supporters,” Wisian said of the elections results. “We will continue to work diligently for the final win on May 24.”

Wisian shares two sons with her husband, Kirby. She is a former television journalist, travel video producer, corporate media producer and the current owner of a creative media company. Wisian also continues to be a rancher at the Red Angus operation. She was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott as the Kendall County representative for the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority board of directors and previously served as the president of the Kendall County Youth Agriculture & Equestrian Center.

In her campaigning and public interactions, Wisian has been a strong advocate for retaining Kendall County’s quality of life. In her campaign preview with The Star, she said she wanted to work toward strengthening lines of communications between all local municipalities and between the county commissioners and residents.

“During my campaign, I set out to meet as many folks in Precinct 2 as possible to hear directly from them about their issues, concerns and vision for our county,” Wisian said. “The residents spoke loudly and clearly that county government needs to spend wisely, protect our natural resources and agricultural land, support law enforcement and ensure safe travel on county roads and bridges. I appreciate the opportunity to fight to keep the irreplaceable character and culture of Kendall County for future generations.”

Brimhall has served as the justice of the peace in Precinct 2 for 12 years and served as the development manager for the county. He previously served as the Precinct 2 commissioner before changing over to his justice seat. Brimhall formerly ran the Artworks gallery and frame shop in Boerne, and he has been a member of the JCPA, serving as the president of the Texas JCPA in 2008.

In his election preview with The Star, Brimhall identified water quality, traffic, growth and the controversial Kendall Gateway study as key issues facing Kendall County. Additionally, he identified the expansion of county offices, extending the county jail, construction a justice center and the Kendall County Court at Law as serious budget and financial issues facing the county over the next few years.

Brimhall said the county’s most “glaring weakness” are the condition of county roads, low-water crossings, bridges and rights of way and traffic congestion. He said the county needed to be proactive rather than reactive in getting ahead of these problems.

The Star attempted to reach Brimhall for comment after Tuesday’s results were in, but was unable to do so before its Thursday press deadline.
