Editor: In many communities across America, local school boards are at odds with their citizens. In some places, the citizens have even been called “domestic terrorists.” Thankfully, that is not the situation in the Boerne Independent School District.
Case in point. In August 2022, the Boerne ISD board of trustees approved a resolution containing five priorities or recommendations for new bills to be considered by our state legislators.
The five priorities were unanimously approved by the seven trustees five months before the beginning of the legislative session. Two of these priorities supported the passage of bills to provide direct financial benefits to Boerne ISD residents.
One priority requested a substantial reduction in personal property taxes for the thousands of homeowners who live within the district. Another priority requested a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in the Teacher Retirement System monthly annuity for the hundreds of retired school employees who live within the district.
Several BISD trustees traveled to Austin during the legislative session and spoke to many senators and representatives about the need for bills addressing these issues.
Presently, these two priorities have been partially achieved. Significant bills passed by the Legislature will be presented to Texas voters as Constitutional amendments in the November election.
The Boerne ISD board and Kendall County’s senator and representative have acted to provide huge financial benefits to their constituents. It’s now time for the district’s citizens to act by voting for these amendments in November. The school board and the district citizens are working together to gain positive outcomes for this community.
