THE BOOKWORM
Have you ever donated to the Friends of the Boerne Public Library? This is a wonderful organization, and the volunteers work very hard to channel the proceeds from donations back to the library.
One of the recent donations we received from the Friends was for an upgrade on our Suspense Fiction section. This has enabled us to purchase many new suspense novels, in addition to adding to some gaps we’ve discovered in the collection.
Suspense is one of the more popular genres in our library. The category holds books steeped in adventure, spy novels, legal thrillers, and more. I don’t read a huge amount of suspense novels, but there are two authors within the genre I’d like to recommend.
James Rollins is the author of many adventure novels. His most popular series is “Sigma Six.” This series includes several elements: action, exotic locations, and a dash of conspiracy.
The first book in the series is “ The Judas Strain.” I began reading this series with “Bloodline,” which introduces the Tucker Wayne character. Tucker Wayne is a former Army Ranger, and his constant companion is his working dog Kane.
One reason I enjoy reading Rollins’ books is that he’s just an all-around nice guy. I’ve worked with him on two book signings. Before turning to writing, James Rollins was a veterinarian. He still volunteers time as a veterinarian for an animal organization in Sacramento.
In addition, he founded Authors United for Veterans, a group of bestselling authors dedicated to raising funds and awareness for USA Cares.
Thanks to the donation from the Friends, we’ve been able to “refresh” the Sigma Six series and now have all the books in this series in print, and on the shelves.
Reavis Wortham is an author from North Texas who writes mystery and suspense novels. His Sonny Hawke series revolves around a Texas Ranger.
The first book in the series is titled “Hawke’s Prey,” and is set in the Big Bend area during a blizzard. It’s fast paced and involves a showdown with terrorists at the Presidio County Courthouse.
Wortham was featured at our 2020 Boerne Book Festival. In addition to his Sonny Hawke series, he is also the author of the Red River mystery series. You’ll find both series by Wortham in print at the library.
Please stop in the library when you get the chance and check out some of the new titles in our suspense section. If you’d like to thank our volunteers from The Friends of the Boerne Public Library, drop by The Bookshop Under the Windmill when you get the chance. It is staffed by volunteers with The Friends.
Their hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Proceeds from everything purchased in this charming shop come back to the library.
