DA sets it straight
Editor: The Boerne Star is to be congratulated for providing the space to Nicole Bishop, Kendall County District Attorney, to provide corrections to articles riddled with inaccuracies, misquotes, and omissions.
Unlike a lot of District Attorneys in the U.S., this D.A. is not afraid to “kick ass and take names” Thanks so much for allowing her the space to set the record straight. It was a very well-written piece and should be read by other DAs and those in the print and image media businesses.
That was a giant breath of fresh air, Ms. Bishop, and thanks for speaking up. Bruce Mabrito Kendall County resident
Safeguarding our ballots
Editor: This letter is in response to the “Progressive Voice” in the July 2 Boerne Star.
The opening statement stating that voting should be easy is truly and absolutely correct. However, easy does not mean virtually effortless.
Having moved here from Louisiana approximately 1½ years ago after enjoying the treatment of Hurrican Ida, I found that registering to vote was extremely easy. In fact, I was able to register to vote, obtain a driver’s license number, register my vehicle with the state, and provide whatever information necessary to be included on the city and county rolls, in less than a day.
Voter ID should be exactly that and follow similar requirements of such things as passports, bank transactions and, as is now the case, the ability to fly commercially. I would have no objection to a student ID even though most students today get a driver’s license while in high school.
I am not familiar with online registration so the only thing I can say about it is that if credit can be established online with proper safeguards, then so should be voter registration. Objecting to having to obtain an application form, fill it out, affix a stamp, and mail it in seems petty and disdainful.
The 30-day requirement can cause problems for some, but prior planning can circumvent them.
No-excuse absentee voting is a misnomer. Absentee means the registrant will not be within a reasonable distance to travel to his voting place, which in Kendall County is any poll. My experience is that of having to report to a specific polling place, so I find this objection petty also.
Mail-in voting has the most potential for fraud and requires stringent regulation. To prevent illegal mail-in voting, safeguards must be in place before the election rather than wait until illegalities appear.
