Boerne High held off a hot-shooting Brazosport team Friday night in Yoakum to advance to the third round of the 4A boys basketball playoffs.
The Hounds beat the Exporters, 56-49, and improved to 29-6. Boerne will play Pleasanton Tuesday at Paul Taylor Field House, 7 p.m.
The Eagles enter the contest at 28-6 and BHS coach Kimble McHone said they’ll be a tough match up.
“They are really, really good,” he said. “They have good shooters, like to press and have two pretty good inside guys, it’s going to be a tough game.”
In last Friday’s contest, Brazosport hit 11 3-pointers, 7 from one player alone, but the Hounds still won the game.
It was close throughout and Boerne was leading 45-44 with three minutes left. Barrett Pape scored the next four points for the Greyhounds to make it a five-point game at 49-44.
From there, the Exporters outscored the Hounds 5-1, with Boerne’s point coming on a free throw by Koen Wolff and Brazosport had trimmed the lead to one at 50-49.
From that point, Boerne was patient and working the clock so the Exporters started to foul and the Hounds were good enough at the line to hold them off. Pape made two FTs and it was a 52-49 lead. After an Exporters miss, Devin Styles was fouled and made a free throw and it was 53-49.
Brazosport missed the front end of a one-and-one and Styles was fouled again with 25 seconds. He made one of his two foul shots and the lead was 54-49, but the Exporters didn’t score the rest of the way.
Brazosport missed a 3, retrieved the rebound and launched another 3 that also missed and the Hounds controlled the rebound with just a few seconds remaining.
From there Styles close it out with a 2-pointer for the final of 56-49.
Styles led the team with 16 points, Houston Hendrix added 11, Pape had 12 and Wolff scored 8 points.
