Loving husband, son and brother, Rick Andrew Mathews passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023, in his home at the age of 60.
Rick was born on March 3, 1963, in Kankakee, Illinois, to Thomas and Carol Mathews. He lived in Momence, Illinois, and San Antonio, Texas, moved to Boerne, Texas, in 1967. Rick graduated from Boerne High School in 1981. He attended Sam Houston State and the University of Texas San Antonio.
Rick is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Owen Mathews; and his grandparents, Walter and Marie Gainski, JD and Catherine Rex, and LeRoy and Alberta Mathews. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Deborah Gleitz Mathews, his mother Carol R. Rex; his brother, Thomas O. Mathews II and his wife, Dana Mathews; his sister, Dawn Mathews McLendon and her husband Patrick McLendon; his nephews, Thomas Owen Mathews III and his wife Paige; Trent Mathews; Matthew McLendon and Sean McLendon; his aunts, Suzanne Brown, Kay Ernsberger, Anne Heller, Barbara Mathews, and Laura Mathews; his uncles, Roger Ernsberger, Doug Heller, Bill Mathews, and Carl Mathews; as well as many wonderful cousins.
Over the years, Rick was employed by Chaparral Materials, Aggregate Haulers and Vulcan Materials. In 1996, he joined his brother Tommy at Westward Environmental, Inc. He held the position of Senior Vice President, Business Development and Administration.
Rick was a talented photographer, a writer and an avid reader. He enjoyed many hours by the water whether it was on his boat, on the beach in Texas or in Cabo San Lucas. Rick was a lover of exotic animals. He cherished his time with his mountain lion, Sampson and his Bengal tiger, Delilah.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband, son, brother and a faithful friend. He brought laughter to every situation and was the life of the party. He will be missed by so many.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Boerne, Texas. A reception will follow at Tusculum Brewery in Boerne.
