Boerne Champion opened its 2022 baseball season by playing in the Northside ISD tournament.
The tourney was abbreviated because of the weather and the Chargers only played two games. They beat Stevens and Brennan and start the year at 2-0. Champion opens district play Tuesday at home against New Braunfels Canyon.
On Thursday, the Chargers beat Stevens, 9-2. Champion was up 9-0 before the Falcons got on the board. They scored 3 in the first, 2 in the third and 4 in the fourth behind 8 hits.
Connor Holtorf doubled and singled and scored 2 runs, Aiden Pickett doubled and singled, drove in a run and scored twice, Jor dan Ballin walked twice, singled and scored twice, Ryan Brandon hit 2 singles and collected 3 RBI, while Josh Bowman hit 2 singles.
Robbie Vela picked up the win in 4 innings and yielded 2 hits and 1 run, while Andrew Frei tossed an inning and gave up 2 hits and 1 run.
In its only other game played on Friday, the Chargers blew out Brennan, 16-0, in four innings and scored in every frame.
Champion tallied 3 runs in the first, 8 in the second, another in the third and 4 in the fourth.
The Chargers had 11 hits, including 2 singles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored from Aiden Pickett, Rowdy Miller singled and scored, Jordan Ballin singled, drove in a run and plated
2 runs, Cam Logan scored 3 runs, Connor Holtorf singled, scored and drove in a run, Luke Hamilton singled and scored twice, Ryan Brandon singled and picked up 2 RBI, Andrew Frei walked twice and scored a run, Josh Bowman singled, scored and drove in a run, Gage Goldberg singled and picked up 3 RBI, Jacob Caraway singled and scored, Aaron Basham singled and scored, Robbie Vela crossed home plate once and Jacob Gresham took 3 walks.
Karson Kaiser picked up the win on just 29 pitches and threw 2 innings. He fanned 3, while Cooper Marshall finished out the game and struck out 2. Neither pitcher gave up a walk, hit or run.
