Greyhounds finish second in Lone Star Cup standings

Boerne High just wrapped up a record setting year in UIL competition while Boerne Champion had a strong finish to end the 2022-23 school year.

As a result, the Greyhounds finished second in the 4A Lone Star Cup standings and the Chargers placed in the top 20 in the 5A Lone Star Cup standings.

The second-place showing is the best by Boerne High in school history. They have finished third on at least two different occasions, while the Chargers have a UIL Lone Star Cup championship under their belt that they won after the 2010-2011 school year.

Points are earned in Team Tennis, Cross Country, Marching Band, Military Marching Band, Volleyball, Robotics BEST, Football, Congress, Spirit, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Mariachi, Film, Basketball, Robotics FIRST, Soccer, Academics, One-Act Play, Theatrical Design, Track & Field, Golf, Tennis, Softball and Baseball.

Both the Greyhounds and Chargers earned most of their points in athletics but some were earned in other UIL activities.

A district title and a playoff berth are worth two points each and each postseason victory is worth two points for each round advanced while a state title picks up additional points for each school.

Boerne High

Boerne finished second with 105 points for its best finish ever in the Lone Star Cup. They were behind a Canyon Randall school that won the 4A title with 137 points.

In the fall, the Greyhound tennis team made it to the state tournament and earned silver medals and then the BHS football team rewrote just about every BISD football record on its way to the title game where they also finished second to bring home silver medals.

Both the Greyhound basketball teams won Region IV-4A titles and qualified for this year’s state tournament in the Alamodome and earned bronze medals.

In the spring, the Lady Greyhound soccer team won the region and made it to the state tournament to pick up bronze, while the boys soccer team went five rounds and was one round short of making it to state to end their two-year reign as state champs.

Both the Boerne softball and baseball teams also went five rounds deep before getting eliminated in the regional finals to cap great seasons.

Team tennis, football, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, softball and baseball all earned double-digit points, while boys golf picked up a couple of points and Spirit earned a point.

Boerne Champion

The Chargers tallied 62 points to tie for 19th place overall in the 5A standings, but were 10 points away from finishing in the top 10. Champion could have made up some of those points in water polo after they finished second in the state to earn silver medals but because the sport was in its inaugural season, points weren’t awarded in water polo this year.

The girls cross country team qualified for state and earned silver medals for 8 points to tie for second best at the school, while the volleyball team picked up points by qualifying for the playoffs.

Both the Champion boys and girls basketball teams advanced to the playoffs, while the boys squad went four rounds deep before getting eliminated and earned 8 points.

Both Charger soccer teams made the playoffs and the boys team won the district title, while the girls went three rounds.

Champion also picked up 8 points in One-Act Play to tie girls cross country and boys hoops for second most and the Chargers also scooped up 2 points in Theatrical Design and another point in Spirit, while the girls golf team earned a point after qualifying for state and tying for fifth.

Champion baseball won the region and qualified for its first state tournament in school history to earn bronze medals to close out the school year and was the biggest point scorer for the Chargers this year with 12 points and was the only sport in double digits.
