April 13, 1939 – June 13, 2023
Barbara F. “Bobbie” Pfeil peacefully entered heaven and the loving arms of Jesus on June 13, 2023, in Boerne, Texas. She lived by the verse, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24. Her family and friends would describe her with Galatians 5:22, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness.” Bobbie embodied the motto “Pass it on” exemplified in Matthew 25:35-36, 40. She left a legacy of family and friends who learned from her servant’s heart and will continue to “pass it on”.
Barbara Adrian Fontenot was born to Murphy and Vivian Fontenot on April 13, 1939, in Eunice, Louisiana. Bobbie had four younger siblings: Chip, Rae, Sharon and Kay Fontenot. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dallas, Texas.
Bobbie attended North Texas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. At North Texas she met and fell in love with Whayne Ray Moore. Whayne and Bobbie married on December 22, 1961, in Naperville, Illinois. Upon graduation, Bobbie taught English in Dallas ISD and Kokomo, Indiana, before she and Whayne began to raise their four children, Margaret, Christie, Jenny, and Jason. They settled in Beaumont, Texas where Bobbie devoted herself not only to raising her four children but also serving her community and church. She was a member of the Beaumont Junior League, a volunteer lecturer promoting music appreciation for youth, as well an English/Government teacher to unwed mothers and pregnant teens in an effort to lower the dropout rate and encourage them to graduate, most of whom did. She served her church, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Beaumont teaching Sunday school, and VBS.
In 1976 Whayne and Bobbie moved to the Texas Hill Country and began a new chapter with their four children owning and operating Heart O’ the Hills Camp for girls in Hunt, Texas. It was here that the Hill Country became home, and Bobbie’s natural gifts of serving, loving, encouraging, and welcoming others were given an opportunity to truly shine. She and Whayne created a home away from home for the campers and counselors, many of whom are still treasured friends of the family. Bobbie’s door was always open, and her kitchen a place all loved to gather. In her home, you were family, and as a result, her children grew up with extra friends at the table and an extended family that helped raise and love them.
While raising their children, Whayne and Bobbie attended countless sporting, cheerleading, and church events. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find one they missed. Bobbie had a heart for the underdog and could often be heard from the stands cheering for the opposing team if the score became unbalanced.
She continued to serve her community and church. Bobbie was a member of the Hunt ISD school board for 10 years, President of the Vocational Advisory Committee with Ingram ISD, a member of Leadership Kerr County, and a faithful volunteer at church and her children’s schools.
Whayne and Bobbie sold the camp and Bobbie returned to her love of teaching. She taught English and journalism and served in the library at Ingram Tom Moore High School. Whayne soon accepted a job as Chief Executive Officer of Economic and Community Development and Operations for the Big Spring Chamber of Commerce. They moved to Big Spring, Texas where Bobbie continued teaching gifted and talented honors English.
Whayne passed away unexpectedly on July 28, 1990, in Big Spring. Bobbie remained there for one year continuing to teach surrounded by supportive friends. She moved back to the Hill Country where she taught at Ingram ISD. Her strength through this time was an example to all.
Through mutual friends, Bobbie met and fell in love with Gerry Pfeil. After their first lunch together at the Peach Tree in Fredericksburg, they developed a friendship that would be the beginning of a second beautiful love story. Together Gerry and Bobbie saw the gift and beauty of each day God gave them. They were married on June 3, 1995, and enjoyed 25 years together. They lived on Pfeil Ranch in Kendalia where Bobbie quickly made lifelong friends whom she treasured. They participated in many organizations and activities. One dear to Bobbie’s heart was the choir at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, where they were members and cultivated precious friendships. She also served on the Session and finished her service to the church as a Deacon. Bobbie again poured herself into the community she called home. She represented the Kendalia Public Library on the Kendall County Library Board, cooked with neighbors for the annual enchilada dinner to support the Kendalia Volunteer Fire Department, and participated in the Kendalia Neighbors Study Club and the Kendalia Community Club.
Bobbie and Gerry treasured time spent with family. Their 17 grandchildren grew up gathering at the ranch, exploring and creating memories. A favorite for all was ice cream on the back porch, where the world always seemed right. Bobbie and Gerry were also blessed with 5 great-grandchildren. Bobbie loved spending time with her grandchildren and was proud of each one.
After 25 years of marriage, Gerry was called home to heaven on August 25, 2020. Bobbie remained at the ranch as long as she could with the loving support of friends and neighbors in Kendalia, for whom the family will always be grateful.
Bobbie then moved to Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs Independent Living Community. Although a difficult move, God prepared a beautiful place for her with sweet loving new friends. While there she participated in the Menger Singers Choir and Flowers with Friends.
To know Bobbie was to love her. Those who knew her for a long time were grateful. Those who knew her for a short time would say they wished they had known her longer. Summarizing her life seems impossible. Continuing her legacy of selflessness, she would simply say, “Pass it on.”
The family extends a special thank you to Bobbie’s caregivers. They are truly angels who daily carry out God’s work. We would also like to thank her church family, choir, and friends at St. Mark Presbyterian Church for their unfailing love and support.
Bobbie was generous in all areas of her life. The family would like any memorials to be made to one of her favorite organizations: St. Mark Presbyterian Church (208 W Bandera Rd. Boerne, 78006), Kendalia Volunteer Fire Department (PO Box 382 Kendalia, 78027) or Kendalia Public Library (PO Box 399 Kendalia, 78027).
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday July 8, 2023, at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Presbyterian Church 208 W Bandera Road, Boerne, Texas 78006
